You know what's absolutley amazing?

I put variations of sanctiond cheating in two of my stories and they did OK in LW. Very few negative comments.

Yes, but you descend from time to time from Olympus to mingle with us mortals. Your perfection is not for us poor humans to contest.

Anyway, sanctioned cheating - you mean agreed cuckolding - generally gets a v negative reception. How much did you pay them?

Sanctioned cheating is not necessarily cuckolding it could be mutual "hall passes".

The fact that readers feel they know your characters better than you do? In my last story, the wife DID NOT cheat on her husband. He jumped to conclusions and thought she cheated only to find it was a misunderstanding.

You can't believe how many people wrote me telling I didn't know what I was talking about, there was no way she wasn't cheating on her husband.

Do they realize, I MADE THE CHARACTER UP? I must have had 10 people tell me the husband was naive and accepted his wife's explanation too easily?

Since the story ran and most who are going to read it already read it, I can now tell the "surprise" ending.

I just can't believe there are those who can not understand, the characters in our stories are created by us, their actions are what we say they are.

Yeeeeesh!

Just to weigh in here...
Take it as a positive critique that the readers understood the story differently from the way you intended. You might be the progenitor but that doesn't necessarily make you the sole authority; after all you are writing to hit an audience. That audience is you bread as a writer, whether financial or emotionally, and they are the one's that are the true judge of how well you hit the mark, how well you conveyed x emotion in x character, or whatever situation you are writing about. Don't take offense when readers don't get your work, or assume something that in you mind isn't true, its them showing you where to improve, where you failed at conveying the situation in your mind onto paper. By them not understanding that the cheating never occurred, well I mean the onus is on you. Take it to heart and see that it's a wonderful opportunity to improve your writing.

Not quite, I don't think. Two, three, four commenters on a Lit. story do not constitute the sense of "the audience" for a story. Thousands of readers are reading the story. Out of that, hundreds wouldn't fully understand the story--any story--if the true meaning of it (should that exist) was engraved on their foreheads by their grandmothers.

If the author gets criticism on something that, upon reflection, the author can agree with--then fine. Otherwise, don't sweat it too much.

Understandable, and often the case, but the OP's use of hyperbole, quote "You can't believe how many people wrote," made me believe this was not an exception but the consensus.

The OP gives a number: 10. There aren't many stories here that aren't viewed in the 1,000s. 10 is not a "consensus" for 1,000.

Ten certainly is not a consensus, but is everybody who reads the story submitting feedback? To write a story and feel that one "explicitly" stated a situation that some misunderstood (The OP does emphasize that he is surprised by the quantity of people responding in regards to the misunderstanding), maybe it might be better to take the feedback into consideration and understand that it might be an author error.

Wow...cheating happens. Sounds like a lot of seriously unstable people to get all bent out of shape over fiction. Guess they were on the dick end of the cheating stick a few times (and likely still can't figure out why  ) and may be having a little flashback meltdown.

But again, cheating happens. You aren't mature enough to figure out how to make a long term alliance with someone, or at the very least realize we're not wired as a sexually exclusive species anyway, and worst, confuse monogamy - which is a legal term indicating marriage to one partner - with sexual exclusivity, then you're in for one hell of a kick in the teeth within about 3-5 years of your happily ever after.

So, basically, on a website dedicated to publishing erotica and fetish, nobody can actually publish erotica or fetish because of all the religious nuts deciding only their naive, moronic, vanilla ideas qualify as legit erotica and everything else is a an offensive violation? Where the fuck do they think they are, Disney Blog? Why can't LE call them aside and explain to them what, exactly, this site is aimed at doing, and its theme?

Whiny people...I swear. I'm offended.

Here, then, should be the only submissions on LW...

Him: Oh, dearest, will you marry me?
Her: Ohhh, darling, yes! I am sooo lucky to have you!
Wedding:
Him: I do
Her: I do!!!!!!
Attendants: golf clap

10 years later
Her: Your sexy hot secretary, is she prettier than me?
Him: oh my word no, she's hideous. I'll never be attracted to anyone else but you.
Her: siiigh
Him: What about the pool boy?
Her: He's nothing but a virile, tan, muscular laborer. I'll never find him appealing.
Him: :rose:

90 years later
Him: I love you even though you're an obese whining nag, and I've never cheated on you.
Her: And I love you, even though you're a squatty bald smelly person who never helps with chores...and I've never cheated on you either.
Him: ahhhh, I love you
Her: ahhh I love you too...

The End

Rest of the real world:

Note to self: don't bother submitting guide to cheating on LE! :D

Was this the story I gave you a few tips on?

LOL, yeah I know what you mean about know-it-alls dictating bogus accounts of your own storylines to you. Hell, I had English teachers doing that crap to my creative homework pieces in highschool.

Methinks they're probably projecting a bit too much of their own lives into your story.

Well, I didn't take as much offense to them...

As I do you saying it is due to the fact that I am a poor writer! Thanks. The point was, that in spite of being the person who created the characters, there are those out there that believe they know more about the characters that their creator, NOT that I was such a lousy writer no one knew what the hell I was writing about.
The story was read by 29,914 people, 40 people left comments, and I got about 15 more through e-mails. Most were very good.
I'm wondering if you read the story before trashing me as the writer or did you just write that to hear yourself talk?

To be fair, I didn't see where the story had been identified. Did I miss that?

Sorry about that nakdsub, I didn't mean for my comment to come off that way. I was just drawing from personal experience where I have had the reader misunderstand a character completely, and that misunderstanding helped me to sharpen the story up. Also I didn't realize you had so many stories under your belt, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it.

I presume that they will abandon the story and read something else. But it seems to the author the temerity to write such a story of punishment.
