A Trump World civil war has erupted over visas for highly skilled workers, with the president-elect’s new tech industry allies like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy on one side and the anti-immigration MAGA base on the other.

The clash is a preview of the challenges in holding the Trump coalition together as his administration executes his immigration policy, an issue that drove his 2024 victory.

But while President-elect Trump has promised to shut down illegal immigration at the southern border and start a mass deportation effort, the latest debate concerns immigrants here legally — exposing a larger, sometimes racist, anti-immigrant sentiment on the right.

The debate was sparked by Trump on Sunday when he announced he was appointing Sriram Krishnan to be a White House policy adviser on artificial intelligence. Krishnan quickly came under fire for a November post suggesting immigration changes: “Anything to remove country caps for green cards / unlock skilled immigration would be huge.”

Far-right provocateur Laura Loomer called the comments “alarming,” accusing Krishnan of supporting foreigners being able to “come to the US and take jobs that should be given to American STEM students.”

The bulk of the discussion began to center on the H-1B visa program, an employer-sponsored visa intended for high-skilled professionals that is used mostly for computer-related and tech jobs. Congress has capped that program at 65,000 per year plus an additional 20,000 for foreign professionals who graduate with a master’s degree or doctorate from a U.S. college or university.

This is a long on going discussion with both sides having valid points.

The issue isn't "anti-immigrant." The complaints are coming from within the engineering community who claim that the H-1B hires are holding down the wages in the industry and to an extent that is a valid argument. Those that are pro H-1B argue that not enough citizens are graduating in those fields to fulfill the job openings and that is also a valid argument.

The media painting this as a "civil war" is bull shit.

The MSM is, in a word, Butthurt. Very Badly Butthurt. It is responding by flinging all the poo it can find like so many monkeys in trees.

They would be better advised to look inward, find the root causes and conditions of their failures, own their own shit, and correct it.

Like I said, this goes WAY back. Started in the 1980's as a matter of fact. Two factors contributed to the issue.

The first is that demand for engineers, especially Electronic and Software started to climb almost exponentially. At the same time the yut's of America started finding out that there were univ. majors that they could obtain without having to work anywhere near as hard..................an attorney for example.

The argument is basically that MAGA fucks don't like immigrants, the people in the field want more balance.

The first are idiots who are stupid. The second have a ground level view of the issue.

In other words.... MAGA fucks are upset that immigrants are even considered to be real people and the rest of the sane world know there's some additional compromise needed on the topic.

You don't know what you're talking about............period.
The entire point of the H1-B visa is that it's tied to the employer, not the immigrant.
So if the worker quits the employment, they are without visa and liable to be deported under the rapist's threats. Are you confused?

Anyone who supports a candidate who campaigns on cutting government but then launches an entire new department that duplicates another department, except that it's headed by two people instead of one, and one of those is an unelected swamp-monster of the sort that is supposed to be cut, is obviously confused.

Yea, if business can't hire slave labor instead of paying American citizens a living wage that would be horrible.....Democrats would lose their fucking minds.
They are not paid slave wages, but they are paid below what US grads would be offered and there is a reason for that.

First of all their airfare is paid for along with initial living allowance. The company pick up ALL legal fees associated with the Visa AND pays for all of the citizenship legal fees as well if the employee wants to become a citizen. Those fees will range between $50,000 up to $125,000 depending on the companies location. Those costs are factored in the the salary over the term of the Visa.

Further the employee CAN move to another company during the period of the Visa as long as that company also qualifies.

The debate is over 'limited' vs 'unlimited' H-1B's.

Yes, the free market understands price of supply.

Yeah, but we like you.

Kinda.

We also owe you Carbon WaterTM royalties, so there's that.

Yeah, but we like you.

This could end up being a big mistake. I've been known to give special room discounts and comp extended stays for guests whose vacation plans have suddenly gone awry.

At least there are cookies. Sometimes.

Maybe Trump will try to appease both sides by increasing the number of H1B visas, but only for white people. 😄

Is Allah into bread? I know Mr. MorningStar is really into pounding. Like when he gets into his groove it goes on, literally, forever.

Cake? You're joking right? Cake has icing and this is... well you know... and it never freezes here.
