Dungeons & Dragons

Oh, I don't think my Lit wife has discovered this thread yet. She'll be thrilled! I was in junior high when the original D& D came out. She only discovered it during covid. Now has two online/phone groups that she campaigns with, serves as a sexy Russian DM for one of them.
You are both welcome to camp out here.

And voices!!
Voices have been something I do my damndest to work on. But, we can't all be Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan. But we can do our damndest!
Watching and playing yourself are two different experiences. Just like some other activities.
So true! I started watching Critical Role, then Covid hit and we found an online group to join. Never looked back!

I play on Foundry with discord for chat. I was the only one using camera and I wanted to because as the GM, I thought it sold the narrative. Ten games in, I discovered I was the only one keeping discord on the screen. Nobody ever knew 😏
Oh noooooo 😱🤣😱🤣 we use discord, but we never turn on the cameras.

So, all those faces you made for your characters etc, they just never knew? I can't imagine that happening to me 😂 I would fuss at them. But, I'm the only girl, so I fuss at them all the time 🤣

And voices!!
This!

One day fooling around had the Mike voice from Breaking Bad down!! I was like, “I had this in my pocket? I’m so making an NPC.”

But come show time, I lost it 😏

It’s great. You don’t know what voices will land and which ones will bring to life your player’s favorite npc.

(Currently it’s a soul bound doll named “jocund”)

We had our weekly game tonight! Our DM always puts some kind of Santa in at Christmas time and gives our characters some kind of amazing gift or grants a wish!

Does your DM, or you as a DM, ever do something special in-game for the holidays?

no. But I ran a My Little Pony One Shot a couple years back where the team had to save Hearthswarming.

I have never been able to run a Holiday session. However, this year I was actually able to play in a two-session campaign where we had a snow globe race and an ice sculpture contest. There wasn't a Santa appearance but it was very fun.

We had our final session of the year last Tuesday. Although it wasn’t Xmas themed in-game, we did have a potluck dinner while playing.
The session took place in the far north of Faerûn. We’re playing Storm Kings Thunder and, on the way to the Eye of the All-Father, I through in an altered version of the dragon encounter from Dragon of Icespire Peak.
An elder White Dragon (essentially an adult White with a ton more HP) descended on the party and took the Ranger’s beast companion - Emjay the cougar - while they were travelling.
The party tracked the dragon to an abandoned fortress and fought him on the roof.
It was an epic battle and almost resulted in two party member deaths.

Acquired the 2024 Players Handbook yesterday along with Vecna: Eve of Ruin. Looking forward to diving into them both this month. Will also likely add the digital version of the new PHB to my DND Beyond account.
Anyone else yet using the new PHB?

I’m also a sucker for the nostalgic books and rules as I started playing in my army teens in the early 80s.
Over the years I’ve been able to build up my collection of all editions and am lucky to have the original core books, AD&D modules and the original Greyhawk campaign setting.
That being said, I much prefer 5e over all others.

Played from 81-83ish. But sports got in the way once I hit high school. Still friends with a couple of the other players actually. I think one still plays. I will have to ask.

I had early access to the PHB and have many complaints. I will be sticking with the 2014 rules as long as I am DMing.

I won’t get into edition wars but I largely agree the 5e is the smoothest and most newbie friendly edition yet. I play it because that’s the group I got but in general I’d probably rather play a more narrative focused rpg. Or DCC if it just wanna look cool while killing monsters.

Since 1980 played all versions except 4E (wasnt impressed/skipped it). Creature voices, accents and sounds are great fun to do whether as DM, player, ambience or voice over. Especially for cancer and other fund raising events... plus other seasonal and themed ones.
