welcome back to the spotlight threads! this thread's spotlight is on bailadora!

the rules for spotlight threads may be found here and say...

on a (more or less) weekly basis, we create a thread that spotlights the members of this community.

1. only those who have specifically given their explicit permission to participate in this process. people may do so by posting to this thread so saying. yes, this means that people might edit their posts and revoke their consent: if you do, please post again with that change.

2. after a thread runs its course, the spotlighted HTer selects any person responding yes to this thread and creates the next thread.

edit: when you select someone, please PM him or her to make sure that person will be available.

3. whatever disagreements we may have with forumites, the spotlight thread is not a place for mockery. people may choose to share what they like, with the understanding that such sharing ought not to be ammunition for abuse.
so if everyone is ready...

bailadora, i have some questions with which i would like to begin the thread:

1. what is your favorite word?
2. what is your least favorite word?
3. what turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?
4. what turns you off?
5. what is your favorite curse word?
6. what sound or noise do you love?
7. what sound or noise do you hate?
8. what profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
9. what profession would you not like to do?
10. if heaven exists, what would you like to hear god say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

:>

1. Luscious

2. Cunt

3. Creatively: Cooking - no, really. Emotionally - strength (not necessarily physical) combined with vulnerability, real connections between people. Spiritually - beauty - in all it's infinite permutations.

4. Rudeness. Common courtesy and manners seem to be slipping by the wayside in our society. I think it's sad.

5. Shit

6. My kids' laughter, windchimes, a sax played by a blues musician.

7. Arguing and whining, especially if it's my kids!

8. Sous chef or librarian

9. Anything medical. Great quantities of blood squick me out.

10. You did your best and I'm proud of you. Welcome home.

1) Describe your ideal vacation:
- for yourself;
- with your sweetie; and
- as a family.

2) What was the biggest obstacle you ever faced?

3) What would you do with $1,000,000?

great answers, bailadora! i have a few follow-ups:

11. would you describe yourself as a foodie?
12. what is your best dish, given that you enjoy cooking?
13. in what other forums do you spend time on lit?
14. do you have a favorite recurring thread in HT/HT cafe, and if so, which one?
15. what forum browsing worst practice most annoys you? :D

Re:Your answer to silver's 4th question.
Are you forgiving to insensitive clods who don't reply to messages, but do offer unreserved apologies and plead extenuating circumstances?

Bailadora! I've long loved your avatar - do you dance?

Also, do you enjoy reading fiction? If so, is there a book that you find yourself rereading again and again?

Thanks, J! I'm kinda partial to it myself! ;)

I did dance, although I'm currently on hiatus. Kid's activities kinda crowd out personal time at the moment, but I'm hoping to get back to it at some point. I was taking tango lessons when I got pregnant with my last child and I loved it.

Yes, I love fiction and am an unabashed romance novel junkie. That said, the book I've reread most often is To Kill a Mockingbird. It's one of my all time favorites.

Ideal vacation :

For myself: a week all to my lonesome at a secluded cabin, with nothing to do but laze around and read (a hammock and a glass of lemonade would be a nice addition). Maybe a few easy hiking trails for when I needed to stretch my legs.

For my honey and I: a location that offers an even mix of relaxation and activity. One year, we took a cruise and really enjoyed that as you could be as lazy or as active as you wanted to be. We went to some pretty interesting locales and got to see some beautiful countryside.

For the family: A location where there is always something to do. We spent some time in the White Mountains this year and the kids really enjoyed it. Visiting caves has quickly become a favorite activity.

The biggest obstacle I've ever faced: dealing with depression. I'd never experienced anything like it and didn't know what hit me. It didn't help that I was also going through a crisis of faith and didn't ever think I'd be able to dig myself out of the hole I felt like I was in. It put a severe strain on our marriage because I just emotionally checked out for a time and my husband had no idea how to deal with and support me. To be honest, there are times I wonder why he stayed. But I'm so glad he did and I'm happy to report that I did eventually regain my faith, feel like I've got a descent handle on the depression and have been working diligently the last several years on mending fences with my honey. It's not something I ever wanted to deal with (TBH, who ever does?), but I also think it's given me patience and understanding for my spouse as he deals with his own pressures/issues.

What would I do with a million dollars?

I'd establish college funds for my kids, donate to charity (cancer research and literacy programs), help my grandparents repair their houses, and invest the rest for retirement. Ok - I'd probably spend a *little* bit to build my dream kitchen. :D

11. Oh yeah, I'm most definitely a foodie. At last count, I have something like 1200 recipes in my collection.

12. My best dish: years ago, a friend shared a recipe for a "poor man's" paella, using chicken and smoked sausage in place of seafood. It's been a hit nearly everywhere I've taken it.

13. I tend to lurk over on the BDSM boards. They've a fairly active crew and some interesting and lively discussions frequently crop up. Once in a blue moon, I'll wander over to the personals for entertainment and a good laugh.

14. Fave HT/HTC thread: I can usually count on the How to Make People Laugh thread to at least make me smile.

15. What forum browsing worse practice annoys me the most? What, I have to choose only one? Um, I really hate it when people start bumping/resurrecting old threads to up their post count. FFS - read the damn sticky and getcha ass on over to the PG.

If it's someone I really like - yes. :rose:

This is a fun idea. I hope I don't ask anything that contravenes the rules, do tell if if I do.

1. Tell us about a situation when you were really proud of how you acted.

2. Who could play you in a film about your life and why?

3. What song did you dance to at your wedding?

4. If you were a mod/admin for a day, what would you change about Lit or HT?

bailadora, i'm really enjoying your answers!

16. if you're a foodie, does this mean you're a food network fan? or are you, like my wife, finding you aren't learning much from it anymore?
17. what's your favorite example of what tony bourdain refers to as "food porn"? and if you aren't familiar with it, i suggest checking out sweeterika's lit story... :D
18. how would you describe your sexuality?
19. whose cuisine would you most like to sample that you have not yet already?
20. what famous chef/food personality's cuisine have you sampled that you most enjoyed, and what was it?

fuckmeat: the only rule you need to worry about is #3, in the OP. but no, you haven't run afoul of it. nice to see you here!

Wow, good questions, Fuckmeat. I'm still thinking about #2, but here are the answers for the rest:

1. I don't know that I'd call it pride in my actions, but more a certainty that what I did was the right thing to do. My sister had been dating a guy that was a complete jerk and none of us liked him. But hey, that happens to everyone right? One evening however, his actions put my sister in serious danger and I confronted him about it and told him that if he ever did something akin to that again, I'd get my parents to intervene (she was underage and still living at home). My sister was LIVID with me. How dare I interfere with her relationship? It was her place to decide if and when there was a problem, and if there was, she'd handle it, thank you very much. We argued about it for several hours and she threatened to cut me out of her life and never speak to me again. To which I replied that although that would hurt me deeply, I would at least know that she was alive and safe. She eventually dumped the guy and we made up, but to this day we still agree to disagree over whether I was correct in my actions.

3. All I Ask of You - Phantom of the Opera.

4. Honestly, I don't think I'd change anything. I think the mods/admins do a pretty good job as it is. *Although* if there was a way to fix it so that newcomers had to read the stickies and forum guidelines before they could start posting, I'd not squawk about that. :D

16. I still watch FN on occasion, but I'm really liking the new Cooking Channel. There are a lot of shows/personalities from the early days of FN (ie the Two Fat Ladies, Nigella Lawson) plus some of the "classics" of cooking shows. I happened to catch a rerun of the Galloping Gourmet the other day and laughed my ass off.

17. Ok, cheesy as it seems today, gotta give a nod to 9 1/2 weeks. I also really liked Like Water for Chocolate. The film was ok, but I loved the book. (BTW - Sweet E's lit story rocks).

18. Evolving. It's taken me a while to shake off preconceived notions, religious and societal programming to finally accept and own what turns me on.

19. Do you mean chef/personality or cultural background? If the first, I'd like to learn more about Michael Symon. If the latter, I'd like to try more Indian food, but need to go with someone who is knowledgeable, as I don't care for spicy hot food.

20. Does it count if I made it myself - using their recipe? One of my "go-to" dinners is Mark Bittman's Chicken with Green Olives. I love the variety of spices in the dish and the way the flavors meld together. The accompanying couscous soaks up all the yummy sauce so that not a drop is wasted.

Ooh! Ooh!! I've got one!!!

If you could spend just one night with NippleMuncher, what would you do to him? ;):D

Just kidding ... One night wouldn't be enough ... ;)

No, seriously, I'm just teasing.:rose:

I know - but you made me giggle just the same. :D

Although I do have some lovely purple rope....;)

If you could have any super power, which one would it be and why?

Sorry if it's already been asked before, I haven't seen it.

What are 3 nonessential things you could not live without?

What would you say if you had to give a description of your personality?

Do you have a favorite author, if so why?

How did you pick your Lit name?

bailadora, i dig some of the stuff on cooking network, too. i really like symon's cook like an iron chef. and it's interesting to see how they found some of the ICA tasters.

re: #19, i meant chef/personality. i like indian cuisine, which isn't always spicy. there's a complexity in the flavoring of indian dishes that i just don't find in other cuisines so i hope you get a chance to sample it some time.

the chicken with green olives recipe looks tasty--thanks for linking it!

21. do you have a preferred non-alcoholic beverage, and if so, what is it?
22. in response to erika's question, you mentioned you struggled with a crisis of faith. insofar as you're open to discussing it, how would you characterize your beliefs?
23. do you still read stories on lit, and if so, do you have a favorite category?
24. what--if anything--do you watch on TV besides cooking channel? :>
25. do you have a favorite author or novel and if so, who/what?

2. Who could play you in a film about your life and why?

I guess the answer to this would be Sissy Spacek. Why? She's a fellow Southerner and would get the accent right. ;) She's also the same height as I. Seriously though, in a way, she's already portrayed me (in Coal Miner's Daughter). I can't sing a lick, so I'm no Loretta Lynn - but the portions of the movie that portray life as a wife and mother before she began her singing career are pretty representative of me. I'm a stay at home mom who takes care of the family and does whatever needs to be done in order to keep everyone on track. It's not very glamorous or of interest to the rest of the world, but it's my reality and I've no quarrel with it. I have a good life and I'm content.

Teleportation! And I want it NOW! My kids' activities often end up competing for the same time slots and I'm left to figure out how to get everyone delivered and picked up on time. Sometimes I can work carpool arrangements with class or teammates, but for some reason it's just not panned out this year. As my husband works clear on the other side of town and gets home late most evenings, it falls to me to be the magician.
