Laughing @ DMV . In Maryland, actually, it's called the MVA (Motor Vehicle Administration), and license plates are called tags.

I grew up in California, lived in Maryland (Baltimore City and County) for eight years, and now in Northern Virginia for more years than I care to recite in a public forum.

For the geographically uninitiated, DMV = DC, Maryland and Virginia (or I supposed it could also stand for Delaware, Maryland and Virginia since there's a Delmarva Peninsula on the east side of the Chesapeake that includes pieces of the two bigger states and all of the little one (not that size matters, of course).
