The lit old timers thread

Had the lunch, my scratch dressing was a hit. I asked for suggestions about improving the dressing and got "add bacon". Surprisingly enough, it had been a bacon-free meal, so next year I will use the suggestion. Even with the prepared stuff, it was a lot of dishes to time- 2 proteins, 2 starches, 2 cranberry sauces, a vegetable, rolls, gravy, dressing. I could do better or more, but it would become a chore rather than a relaxing day. Probably 5 more people to drop by for pie between meals at their various families.
My invitation obviously got lost in the mail 🤣 ! Next year perhaps??

Next oldies question- How goes the Christmas decorating and shopping?
you had to go there, din'tcha?

actually, two of the gifts i already bought i gave yesterday... both tree of life pendants, one with a rainbow crystal backing it. They were for my m-i-l and her bestie; at 100 and 80+ it seemed as good a time as any

NO xmas decs yet... about a week before xmas suits me fine

Bought new helmets for the kids for snowmachine adventuring. And some special craft beer for them, too. And they are smart enough to not mix up the use of the gifts.

I can't do any shopping until pay day. I've got my daughter and her wife, my bestie and her mom plus her 5 kids and finally my roommates.

Candy for the 5 kids, easy
I think I'll get my daughter and wife jammies plus gift cards.

My bestie, I'm not sure? Her mom, maybe some kind of gift basket?? I'll make gift baskets myself

My roommates will get odds and ends. A gift basket for both. Some candy, nuts, hot chocolate mix, maybe Walmart gift cards.

I've become a conscious gifter the past couple of years. I try not to give a bunch of stuff. That why I give food and candy. Even clothes can be used smartly such as giving them away to second hand stores when you don't want them anymore.

I wanted to keep the thread active, and I thought it more interesting than a discussion of Thanksgiving leftovers. (Finished off the corn, dressing, and mashed potatoes tonight.) Cheyenne likes to shop and handles most of that. So I can't really discuss what I'm buying her here. She did ask for a home project as her priority, so I think that's finished to her satisfaction. I have gifts ordered for her, and some have arrived. Haven't decided if I'm done. She's hard to shop for because she is a shopper. I have to find something before she knows that it exists. Outdoor decorating is my thing. I have the mild form of seasonal affective disorder, and lights cheer me up. I have all of the doors and windows outlined, all of the shrubs lit, a few lit figures on the porch, a few lit decorations in the windows, and more than a few lit snowflakes hanging on the side of the house. Only about half of the icicle lights are installed at this point, and none of the yard decorations.

Why? Because the landscaper contracted by the HOA hasn't finished clearing the leaves. I'm not running drag cords and inflatables for them to mulch, and I'm not setting my extension ladder on an unstable drift of leaves. All year long they have been careless about which direction they discharge their lawn clippings when they mow. They compensate by running leaf blowers all around the house each week, regardless of whether I am trying to sleep in, watch tv, or enjoy music. Come November when most of the leaves are down, they can't be bothered to use one. Or for that matter, mow close to the house because they can't see the downspouts for the leaves. It remains to be seen if they can complete the task before snowfall, which is overdue. No. I don't know if Killswitch is to blame.

Decorated one of the trees and lit it up, also put the electric Christmas trees out. I figure I'll put them on the deck if and when the landscape service shows, but snow is forecast for tonight, and it's supposed to rain again when a warm front arrives, so it will be too wet to mulch leaves then. Rigged the icicle lights with pipes so that I can stand on the planter by the front door and hang them from a hook at the peak of the roof. Anyway, should be quicker, easier and safer to put up and take down from now on.

We typically celebrate US Thanksgiving and I cook the meal. This year has been too chaotic, so I am skipping it. Next year! Enjoy your day.
I skipped Turkey day as well. Didn't want to deal w/ the family BS so I relaxed at home w/ my dog, football, and pizza in the afternoon. I ended up working Mon. - Fri. and found myself at work on Sat. for a short time. I would have actually worked Sat. but the gas has been turned off so I can't use the washing machines. Hope it's back on tomorrow. There are smelly football jerseys that need to be washed. Crummy things tho, Wed. and Thur. I was at work just a cpl hours. Fri. I worked for 10 hrs. My job contract has Wed. - Fri. as paid days off. So I'm not sure if I will get comped time or if I need to flex my hours another week. Then again, just might chalk it up to volunteer hours. haha.

Pass on outdoor tree decorations..... When the wind blows a gazillion miles an hour, outdoor decorations don't last long here.

I remember that situation well.

I'm just here to ask if anyone wants me to send them n00ds.

Alternatively, as this is 2023 (almost 2024), a link to my OF.

I would totally believe that the guy I met 20 years ago could pull that off. He looked fit as a firefighter.

Hola.. I've been here in and of for what seems like my entire adult life... under different names..cuz someone forgets her pw..my first nick on here was my favorite.. krackheadkathy...then came ksmith...(something.. I forget) then krankybytch and finally kathyisgr65.. anyway just passing through and saying hi

So yesterday I get up to the sound of lawnmowers and leaf blowers promptly at 8AM. Remove the yard decorations and extension cords. After a 5 man huddle the landscapers gave up and drove off. They never made it out of the first yard. I put the decorations back.

Today, same wake up call. As many as 5 guys and never fewer than 3 worked for 3 hours to get the snow covered leaves out of my yard and flower beds. Yeah, they took a lot of cedar mulch out of the flower beds in the process, but did an acceptable job that probably could have been done by 2 guys in 20 minutes back before the rain, freeze, and snow.

I am essentially finished decorating. The lights are hung, the inflatables are up, the miscellaneous decorations are in place. I'm thinking about improvements for next year.
