A hacker has breached and stolen customer data from TeleMessage, an obscure Israeli company that sells modified versions of Signal and other messaging apps to the U.S. government to archive messages, 404 Media has learned. The data stolen by the hacker contains the contents of some direct messages and group chats sent using its Signal clone, as well as modified versions of WhatsApp, Telegram, and WeChat. TeleMessage was recently the center of a wave of media coverage after Mike Waltz accidentally revealed he used the tool in a cabinet meeting with President Trump.

The hack shows that an app gathering messages of the highest ranking officials in the government—Waltz’s chats on the app include recipients that appear to be Marco Rubio, Tulsi Gabbard, and JD Vance—contained serious vulnerabilities that allowed a hacker to trivially access the archived chats of some people who used the same tool. The hacker has not obtained the messages of cabinet members, Waltz, and people he spoke to, but the hack shows that the archived chat logs are not end-to-end encrypted between the modified version of the messaging app and the ultimate archive destination controlled by the TeleMessage customer.

Data related to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the cryptocurrency giant Coinbase, and other financial institutions are included in the hacked material, according to screenshots of messages and backend systems obtained by 404 Media.

For those still considering the use of a free download to discuss highly sensitive military information, here's something to consider.

DNS lookups (how you turn a domain name into an IP address to contact the server through the internet) are not usually encrypted when done over cellular data.

Most sites, including government sites ARE encrypted, with 2048bit encryption, to prevent snooping even on the state level.

HOWEVER...State actors like Russia, China, Iran, whoever could absolutely have people infiltrating the Certificate Authorities like Lets Encrypt or whoever else, and fabricate certificates for various domain names or even IPs. Then they can run a Stingray to intercept Hegseth's traffic. Once they have a fake certificate that authenticates just fine because they have an agent working at a CA, they can then proxy his connection to literally anywhere by simply having fake certs on hand.

And at that point his connection might as well not even be encrypted because the traffic is fully exposed to the foreign power. This wasn't a problem before because before the people in his position didn't just use an off the shelf cell phone, but rather used a special secure communications device that doesn't communicate the normal way, and requires more secure, better vetted CAs.

The usual CAs we all use are generally regarded as hyper secure vs hackers, NOT well funded espionage. Means some script kiddie or Cult of the Dead Cow wannabe isn't going to be able to just Man in the Middle your connection to Ebay and steal your credit card numbers or redirect the shipment of that ultra rare pokemon card you bought. But that's a much lower threat.

The amount of funding required to infiltrate a CA like that means much higher stake things have to be on the table... like access to everything Hegseth says and does on his consumer grade cellular device.

Signal clone app, TeleMessage (founded in Israel), has been hacked. Its one important difference to the encrypted Signal is that it archives messages and so remains in compliance with data retention requirements for gov't officials.

However, a benign hacker found it very easy to get inside the system and revealed a litany of issues:

After receiving a wave of media coverage last week, TeleMessage was hacked, 404 Media reported on Sunday. The hacker told 404 that he was able to breach and steal customer data “in 15 to 20 minutes,” including messages sent via the app’s Signal clone. The data includes message contents, the names and contact information of government officials, and TeleMessage usernames and password data. While Mike Waltz’s messages were reportedly not breached, US Customs and Border Protection, Coinbase, and Democratic legislators were reportedly compromised.

Some of the stolen messages were particularly timely. A chat called GD Crypto (apparently related to the crypto firm Galaxy Digital) revealed discussions between the firm and prominent Democrats regarding opposition to the GOP-led effort to create a regulatory framework for stablecoin issuers. One message read: “Just spoke to a D staffer on the senate side – 2 cosponsors (also brooks and Gillibrand) did not sign the opposition letter, so they still think the bill has a good chance…”

The hacker described the whole endeavor as “not much effort at all” to all 404. But even their relatively gentle efforts revealed critical vulnerabilities in the app. And the implications are much broader than Mike Waltz. According to public records, TeleMessage has contracts with dozens of government bodies, including the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security. And the Reuters photograph of Waltz revealed that he was messaging other Trump cabinet members, capturing threads labeled “JD Vance,” “Rubio,” and “Gabbard.” While it’s not clear whether those users were on Signal or TeleMessage, either is possible.

Further, 404 was able to verify that the TeleMessage server that was compromised is hosted on Amazon’s AWS cloud infrastructure in northern Virginia. As 404 points out, simply introducing a third-party server for storage doesn’t preserve the security of end-to-end encryption offered by Signal. And it’s slightly mortifying that all it took for a skilled hacker to confirm this reality was, in the end, “not much effort.”
