Anyone who knows me, knows my happy place is the beach, always has been. My mom was a single mom, but every summer she’d take me down to our favorite beach town for 1-2 weeks. There is just something about it that takes all my worries and sadness away, sometimes I’ll even jump in my car and go off season. It’s great therapy for the soul, nothing like listening to the sound of the waves while walking along the beach.

Lately my happy place has been spoiling my sweet dog as she was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago, she has got me through some really tough times, she’s my heart dog.

As for this place, in my 10 years here, sometimes it’s been a happy place, sometimes not. I’ve made so many wonderful connections of different types. They’ve helped me through a lot and I’m grateful for them, more than they will ever know.

Honestly, the way this makes me smile. Two people I've known for a bit, who are both kind, good souls, sharing something real and heartfelt and authentic. I'm getting soft in my old age, but this is the good stuff.

Happy Place

Where is your happy place? Do you have one? Is there a place that when you are there, you feel like the weight of the world is off your shoulders, you’re accepted, you’re at peace, you can recharge?

In the sense of a physical location? This isn't really something I get to experience nowadays. But any change of scenery is refreshing to some extent, even if the weight of the world still travels with me.

Luckily, airlines don't charge extra for emotional baggage, although RyanAir are probably working on it.

So my happy place nowadays is...underneath my cat

What is it about this place that makes you feel so grounded?

Because however bad a day it's been, she always loves me and wants my lap. No questions asked (except implied ones about whether I've also got any chicken. Or steak. Or butter. Or cheese. Or ham. Or if there are any butt scratches going).

And who doesn't feel better for that?

I don't know that I have a specific spot, but the track comes to mind. But so do lots of places I run because I think it's more the act than the place. But there is something about the track where you know you're about to do something really damn hard, but also very rewarding.

World off my shoulders, no. Likely even the opposite. Getting out there and running, especially on your own, puts you completely alone with your thoughts and feelings. That may sound scary, it is a bit, but it's also a really good way to process and move towards peace. Eventually I do kind of forget everything and just run.

What is it about this place that makes you feel so grounded?

Again, not a specific place, but typically when I run I'm in some sort of nature. My feet are on the ground and I can take in the sky, the smells, the scenery, sounds, all those things. And outside of Garmin giving me ridiculous amounts of real time data, I'm disconnected. I'm not checking my phone, notifications are silenced, no one is getting a hold of me. The only place I would say I feel as free as I do when I run is when I'm on a bike for all the same reasons.

Once more, I'm coming to another H&B prompt late, but I happily echo the voice of some of you.

I used to live near the ocean. At sunset, I used to drive to the beach, park a 1/4 mile away and walk across the cool sand, sit close to the ocean, and watch the California sun set over the Pacific. There was something magical about standing at the edge of the world, watching as the day fading to night. The setting sun would paint the sky into streaks of gold, soft shades of purple and a fiery orange-- casting a warm glow over the ocean waves. I always felt a sense of peace, renewal and optimism on those visits. The rhythmic sounds of the waves, gently crashing to shore added to my peace of mind.

The beach at sunset reminds us all that some endings can be beautiful. A daily goodbye that helps us feel grounded and grateful. And it serves as a simple reminder on how the meaning of the words, "Until next time..." is more of a cheerful promise than a goodbye cliche.

My life is my happy place..
I wake up everyday and choose to be happy.
Rather it be the chaos of a hectic work schedule, destroying myself in the gym, chasing my dogs across an open field, slow rolling down a country road with the radio blasting or just being around those I hold dear I make the conscious decision to enjoy it and be happy because none of this shit is guaranteed.

So, there I was, sitting on the beach yesterday, watching this kid running around throwing sand at his sister, talking back to his grandma, generally being a pill. I remember those days with young kids on the beach. It's such a romanticized idea; you think it's going to be like you see on tv with everyone happy and clean and playing nicely, but in reality they're tired and hungry and hot. I don't miss that part.

This boy's mom repeatedly corrected him. She was working hard. He started going in the rough waves despite her warnings and sure enough he got walloped. He fucked around and found out (FAFO). He was fine but he got his bell rung. (Side note: is this a saying anywhere other than the US? Getting your bell rung is when you get knocked down or hit really hard and it takes a while for you to catch your breath. Not fun.)

This topic of FAFO came up in a conversation with @Mei5ter this morning when we were discussing things that you do not mess with. Are there things that you just do not fuck with? There are things that I joke around about but there are other things that, it might seem silly or for whatever reason, I just can't be flippant about. Maybe it is a superstition or a story you heard when you were little. Maybe it is a person that you don't cross. When you think of FAFO, what comes to mind?

But I’m also not the one who’s gonna hang out in “haunted” places by myself at midnight on the anniversary of whatever great tragedy occurred there saying “See, nothings happening. I’m perfectly safe.”

I’ll do ghost tours. Pretty sure if it’s commercialized it’s fine. Honestly it’s less about fear of spirits and more about fear of the type of folks who want to be at those places at that time. Doesn’t seem harsh at all. Seems completely appropriate to me. In fact, you’re doing the most loving and responsible thing you can, whether they know it or not.

Absolutely.

Even more generally people who weaponize their words and emotions in any way are questionable to me. Sometimes hard things need to be said, and that may make someone feel bad. But if the goal is to make them feel bad or small or stupid or inadequate….yeah that’s a problem.

Not one I’m completely immune to. But I’ve gotten a lot better. And for me the find out part is when I revert to that behavior in response. I do not like that. For either of us.

I will not be held hostage. It's amazing how one wellness check curtails that behavior. Or course that might be because they don't speak to you for two years after one screaming telephone call.

I’m definitely a bit bitter about this topic, because when I read that bolded line, I thought

“They consider THEIR lives more important than ANYTHING or ANYONE”

Which is messed up, all things considered. But really… they don’t care about sending me awful, horribly depressing and anxiety inducing messages when I’m on the way to work, or a few weeks after a serious loss, or simply because their dicks are feeling lonely while I’m actively working to aid refugees that have NOTHING AND NO ONE.

I have so much empathy that it circles right around and ends up biting people in the ass. You want me to care? BET. Let’s fucking care, but you’re not going to like it. Not at all.

In many ways I am easy going, but I do have a temper. One that's set of by any type of dissembling. I have done some eviscerating with words in my time, but am always trying to improve. It's a work in progress.
