No, they actually use less water than washing by hand. The electricity use isn't too major either. (Though it would be lower, if they could be attached to both hot and cold water, here it's cold only.)

My dishwasher uses much less water than handwashing would take. It runs a very long cycle and uses a very small amount of water. I actually feel bad when I hand wash lots of items.

"...standard dishwashers typically use 3-4 gallons per wash cycle. Hand washing dishes can use up to 27 gallons, churning away about 15 gallons for every five minutes the faucet runs."
From KitchenAid website - the brand I own.

We have dishwashers on the supply boats, but they're never used.
Everyone simply washes their own and one of us will do the ones that were used for cooking.

I live in an apartment and they put the thing in a corner where it's difficult to operate so I wash by hand. I usually don't have company, but if I do...it's there. It's only Lady K and I, and maybe soon a furr baby.
