A bloody good idea

I'm still interested Earl..though i realise i'll need a really lovely editor type person to help me get my work up to scratch...are there some folks out there willing to do that for others? I know my grammar needs attention but i'd like to have a go at submitting something as a learning process type thing even if i don't get accepted :)

I'm still interested - I want not only to be a published writer, but one who people pay toread. Whether I'm good enough is of course for others to say, but I think I am else why bother? I'll pop over to the nominations thread and drop a couple in.

See what happens when I turn away for a day or two?

It sounds like an interesting idea and I agree with the aim high, settle for less. That's the way to go in any attempt for publishing and is the way I do for my other works. I'm not sure about the market for erotica (who's big, who's not, what hoops you have to jump through) because most of my publishing attempts have either been sci/fi fant or plays. I can also offer my services as a whatever man to fill whatever horrible jobs or unpleasant tasks you may have left.

Also, I suspect a wide-range anthology will do better than an overly focused one as it will a) allow the best works to be published b) our styles are so diametrically opposing in sex use and plot structure that mere subject differences are not going to have as big of an effect on the "like their kink" market and wide-range pieces have more potential hooks (if they see one story that's really up their alley they'll be more likely to give the whole work a run for its money. at least, that's what I do when I pick up an anthology) c) wide range will give publishing companies more hooks to accept. If they like some parts but not others they can tell us to remove those parts and give them something else for them rather than dismissing the work as a whole because it doesn't fit into their market policy.

Also, a reminder to everyone. Getting published is hard. The rule of thumb is to aim for as high as you can go but expect the lowest you can (having it burned in front of you while loved ones lob eggs is a good rung to avoid disappointment). That's not to scare everyone away, but don't expect a week turn around acceptance that blooms into a bestseller. You might have year long response times. You might get brusque rejection letters. You might get eaten by dingoes.

That being said, I'm itching to try. It sounds like a blast and I do want to publish in a book book sometime instead of magazines.

Dingos do seem to have rather strong jaws - I was glad this one was behind a fence.
I can't see "dingo" without thinking, "Dingoes ate my baby!" :D

Edited to add: Sorry! [end threadjack]

Just stoped by to show my support. If there is anything I can help with let me know.
Good Luck everyone.

I'm late, but I'd be happy to help out too. If you need a story, or a tough editor, or some brutaly frank opinion, I can do that.

My only fear is that some egos might get bruised in this process. Are you guys ready for that?

I know some editors too, but like I said, they don't handle anthologies.

I'd be happy to edit, but I can't commit to much for another 5 weeks or so when I'm on summer break from school.

WARNING: Known to be nasty when editing but in a constructively nasty way.

As far as signing my own work up, I'd want to at least be privvy to what other work was going to be included. I don't think there need to be a billion people giving the thumbs up, but I also don't like the idea of handing my work over willy nilly to just anyone to be compiled with just anyone else's work.

Does that make me a bitch?

Whatever your answer to the above question, I still like the idea and want to be kept abreast of any progress.

Still up for it. If my ego must be brutally bruised, beaten and ravished, so be it ... sorry, was I saying something?

I'm more than happy to help edit.. I'm not the best at knowing what would make a story better, but I can generally see the problem areas.

Mechanics are easy to spot, it is the revisions that are hard to discuss sometimes.

(Please kick me out of here. I must study for my lab practical tomorrow. I just couldn't resist one last opportunity to flog a sexy flank... You know how it is.)

DrM would you look over the couple of stories I nominate for me? I know you'll have to be all harsh and nasty and cruel and ruthless etc etc etc but I'm partially ready for it and you know I like it rough *chuckles*

Ok I was thinking, my christmas story from last year is one of my very best but its very obviously a Chirstmas story...should I put it forward or would it not fit in a general anthology'cos of the specifically christmassy feel?

Zoot, you're a star, have I ever told you that? You are exactly the kind of person needed to help look over the stories and get harsh with them.

I've already mentioned the bruised egos thing a couple of times, and yep, very thick skins are what's needed. Nobody will be fucking about on this.

Something to think about

I don't remember seeing this discussed, so ....

I stopped this morning to talk to a manager of a local Barnes & Noble, admittedly not at the top of the publishing food chain but she certainly has an idea of local interests ... and it is the most mainstream of booksellers.

I told her something of the plan and about the search for a focus or theme.

She said:

the market for adult males is well-filled by the Penthouse series largely. The market for Gay and Lesbian is fairly well-targeted and supplied as well. (I checked the store's holdings -- they had about 30-40 of the Penthouse series in the "Sexuality" section and maybe 15-20 Gay and Lesbian offering, most of them being Lesbian).

She said what is not being done, and she feels that she has a market for it, is:

Target heterosexual females

Target couples

She offered the notion that she saw a fairly untouched market in each of those areas.

Hope this helps.

Soft: Coincidentally enough, that's just what I and my fellow conspirators have been discussing. Great minds...

Thanks,

The Earl
