Couple years back, we drove across the Southwest to Durango, Colorado, on the Rio Animas, river of souls. Our motel was north of town along the tracks of the Durango & Silverton narrow-gage railroad (NGRR) aka the old Denver & Rio Grande Western. Don't take that ride; it's a ripoff; take the Cumbres & Toltec NGRR out of Chama NM instead. (*) A prairie dog town sat on the far side of the D&S tracks. Heads popped from every hole when a train passed. Yes, prairie dogs are train-watchers. Without heroin and haggis, I hope.

(*) The Durango & Silverton runs mostly in steep canyon bottoms with no views. The Cumbres & Toltec runs anong ridgetops with superb views, and has a great lunch stop along the way. The D&S just runs buyers to shops in Silverton where there's nice stuff if you know what to look for. We got a unique Dalawepi pot, cheap.
