Calista rode silently as they approached the home of Lucius Cinna. The raven haired beauty sat in the cart with her head hung low. Her wide brown eyes did not watch the passing scenery, instead she looked at her feet. She had promised herself she wouldn't cry any longer. She was to wed Lucius Cinna.
The name felt unfamiliar to her. She knew that his father had been her father's oldest friend. She had met the man a few times over the years, but she could not place any memory of his son. The last few days seemed surreal to her. Her father, Aulus Soranus, was dead. His widow was saddled with debt and before Calista had had the chance to mourn her father, the marriage had been arranged. Her clothing was packed in a chest beside her. Her life as she had known it was over. With her father out of the public eye and lving just on the edge of financial ruin, she had been able to set her own course. Her father was happy to have her at home and he had no reason to press her to marry. But that life was gone.
The journey from her rambling home in the countryside seemed to take hours. As the driver brought them into Rome proper Calista was struck by the crush of people and the noise. Even the cart rolling on the cobblestones seemed deafening to her. She folded her hands and whispered a prayer. She wasn't sure what she wanted. She didn't even know what to ask for, more than anything she just hoped that her new husband would not hate her. He had not had any choice in the matter either.
