She gave them as much time as possible but as the sun was setting she finally entered her hut. It seemed so full of people and in the middle was Darius, laughing about something that one of his brothers had said. Ayleen smiled hesitantly at her and she smiled back.
When Darius turned and saw her, he came to her and kissed her before proudly introducing her to his family. His brothers all favored each other greatly, and Darius too. It was strange to think that in the beginning all five of these big, strong men had been together inside the small woman that was their mother.
Darius placed his hand on Fiona’s belly and announced that they were expecting triplets. His brothers laughed and slapped Darius on his back but his mother stood there looking skeptically at Fiona for her belly as of yet showed no traces of one, much less three babies growing within her.
“I realize that it may be hard for a non-believer to understand but the gods talk to me, tell me what we should do. What we should not do. They have power.”
“But how can you know that already you carry a child, much less three?”
“The gods have told us. The village saw the sign.”
The woman looked at her hesitantly and Fiona smiled, wanting to break the tension. “I am sure that you must be hungry. Continue with your visit while I prepare some nourishment.”
Ayleen wanted to help but she smiled and shook her head and encouraged the girl to spend time with her family. It did not really take that long to prepare the food and soon they were all sitting around eating and talking.
