Anna didn't remember the accident, really. There was a feeling of spinning, spiraling out of control, a white-hot flash of pain that seemed to envelope her whole body, and then . . . she was standing in front of this strange woman.
Her eyes wavered a bit between the woman, and the images she had given them, and the still forms on the ground. This was . . . unreal. Weren't they supposed to be seeing a tunnel and light? Not this sort of bargain set-up, and an offer to having the whole thing reversed.
But she didn't want to die, and it was hard to ignore the idea of what the woman was showing them. People dying, homes burned and land despoiled. This was high fantasy, the kind of thing that heroes took care of. This was the kind of thing that no feeling person would be able to stand aside from. She'd spent enough time in martial arts to know that there was a duty the strong owed to the weak. And if this woman could help them aid the people here . . . .
"I'll take your offer, ma'am. I'll fight against the evil in this world."
