The entire bar was full at this point, as the soccer game was going on in the numerous televisions inside. I wasn't able to get a seat inside, but I was lucky enough to find a empty seat at the patio. At the moment, I found myself in New York city; the big apple. I wasn't from around here, at it was barely my second day here. I was a California girl, you see. I found my life to be incredibly redundant and I just wanted to escape it. My parents weren't too happy about it, as I was merely a nineteen year old woman, but I was determined to find my own way.
I was eagerly watching the game. I was part German, so I was obviously rooting for the country that I've identified myself with for practically my entire life. I felt a bit uneasy, due to the fact that I was by myself at the bar, with no friends. The stares I would get were a bit unsettling, as most men would practically drool all over my chest, but nothing drastically worrisome happened. Thank god.
It was June 13th and it was the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The match had barely begun, Germany vs Australia. I was surprised to see that so many people were worked up by this. In my suburban neighborhood, people barely even took note of FIFA. They loved baseball, a sport I wasn't fond of.
The waitress obviously took note that I hadn't really ordered anything but a glass of water. I wasn't in the mood to drink by myself, after all. But to my surprise, she didn't ask me if I was going to order anything or leave. Instead, she slid a glass of champagne to me.
"It's a gift from the nice man over there." she said, quickly hurrying off to serve other customers.
I glanced at the drink then looked for whoever just gave me the drink. I wouldn't feel right without giving a simple 'thank you'.
