A Gallimaufry For The Lackadaisical Logophile

Don't use a big word when a singularly unloquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity.

Your parsimonious recommendation, a quintessence of unencumbered circumlocution, free of unnecessary verbal accoutrements, will be appreciated by Lit’s perspicacious readership, including those in the sesquipedalian demographic.

Reading this thread reminds me of my Charles Addams and Edward Gorey books. They have remained packed in boxes since the late eighties.

Gorey's books were beautiful, horrifically fun, and macabre. Well before discovering and getting my early fright-fixes from Stephen King, James Herbert, and Peter Straub, I enjoyed reading Gorey under the covers, the well-thumbed pages illuminated by my Six Million Dollar Man flashlight.

You can see Gorey's influence watching Tim Burton's early short films and Nightmare Before Christmas.

Thanks for exhuming some dear, wonderful childhood memories. :)

TRIMETHYLAMINURIA

[noun]

Trimethylamine then builds up and is released in the person’s sweat, urine, and breath, giving off a strong fishy odour or strong body odour.

My local outlet for PBS programs has been recycling episodes of "Vicious."
It is a delight to watch Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi interact.
It was not possible, to have John Gielgud take Ian McKellen down, a notch or two.
He had left us, long before they started filming the series.

Arthur John Gielgud, actor, born 14 April 1904; died 21 May 2000

mellifluousness

John Gielgud

He became the Hamlet by which 20th-century performances were judged. John Gielgud played the role more than 500 times, in six productions: at 26 and at 44, in London, in Elsinore, and on Broadway, where he triumphed over a production starring Leslie Howard.

At the end of the second world war, he performed for troops in the Far East, although he had "rather wanted to do Charley's Aunt". A 1941 radio recording demonstrates his wonderful power, capturing not only the mellifluousness for which he was famous, but a choked-up ferocity. He could make paralysis sound like an assault on himself.

Blackadder: Every single one, sir?

Dr. Samuel Johnson: Every single word, sir!

Blackadder: Oh, well, in that case, sir, I hope you will not object if I also offer the Doctor my most enthusiastic contrafribblarities.

Dr. Samuel Johnson: What?

Blackadder: "contrafribblarities", sir? It is a common word down our way.

Dr. Samuel Johnson: Damn!

[writes in the book]

Blackadder: Oh, I'm sorry, sir. I'm anaspeptic, phrasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericombobulation.
