a gb book club?

I remember when perk tried starting one last time, and the initial response was enthusiastic but the final result was disappointing. I myself ended up not liking the book chosen--"Good Omens" by Gaiman & Pratchett--so I didn't even finish it. I'll be observing with interest anyway, since I've heard oodles of good stuff about "Cloud Atlas" if that's what y'all end up reading.

i considered good omens as it's a fave of mine...but as you say, not to everyone's taste.

You've got to admit mate, when you first showed up here you weren't exactly user friendly. Since then you've proved to be a reasonable human being.
Chefs are usually assholes, I think it's the stress of the job.
Being called a reasonable human being is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me
*tears up*

Yeah, the two writers are pretty darn popular so I was rather surprised by my reaction. "Atlas" is more up my alley but I have too many books lying around that I've bought but haven't read yet. :D

TWM- I recommend it to anyone.
A Child Called It- Angela's Ashes is better written and much funnier.
Anything by Paul Theroux is worth reading.

I've never heard of Angela's Ashes but how can a book on child abuse be funny...never mind I'll read it and find out.

Angela's Ashes was all the rage about a half a dozen years ago, it was an Oprah Book Club selection if I remember right. Not exactly light reading, in fact, it's kind of a downer. It was so popular that there was a sequel. The sequel was awful, I don't think I waded through more than a few pages before I tossed it aside.

You've got to admit there were moments of humour in it. If it was unremettingly grim, it would have been unreadable.

Three weeks with My Brother- Nicolas Sparks Probably not liked if you don't enjoy Nicolas Sparks. It takes you on a journey they took around the world and into their past and memories.

Safely Home- Randy Alcorn

Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood-Jefferey Marx

OK, checked "Cloud Atlas" out of the library today.

Is this the book? Well, until we all decide for sure...

Thursday, 7th Novenber -

Beyond the Indian hamlet, upon a forlorn strand, I happened on a trail of recent footprints. Through rotting kelp, sea cocoa-nuts & bamboo, the tracks led me to their maker, a White man, his trowzers and pea jacket rolled up.....

if you can get it from the library Dolf, i'd say persevere. each segment has its own unique writing style and even language. the further i'm reading, the more i'm liking it...

I'm getting in a little late but perhaps I could catch up.

I'll see about getting it at the library. I just finished a book so I'm in need of a new one to read.

Hey guys! I thought this thread died but I checked out the book anyway... I've just started the fifth story "Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rthin' After". I'm loving it...

It is kinda starnge to get into, especially at the end of the first segment (I guess that's what you call it ~lol) where they just stop in mid sentence! I was looking for the torn out pages :D

But It's interesting, the subtle ways they are are tied to together lifetime to lifetime...

Are Booby and I the only ones reading it?

Cloud Atlas

didn't see this thread before. Sounds like fun. I'll check and see if Cloud Atlas is in the library here.
When did you want it read by?

No time limit, as far as I'm concerned...

It's quite unique!

There must be a lot of people here who play on Lit - all copies of the book are checked out and there are 5 holds requested :D
