i considered good omens as it's a fave of mine...but as you say, not to everyone's taste.Adrenaline said:I remember when perk tried starting one last time, and the initial response was enthusiastic but the final result was disappointing. I myself ended up not liking the book chosen--"Good Omens" by Gaiman & Pratchett--so I didn't even finish it. I'll be observing with interest anyway, since I've heard oodles of good stuff about "Cloud Atlas" if that's what y'all end up reading.

A Child Called It- Angela's Ashes is better written and much funnier.
Anything by Paul Theroux is worth reading.
Angela's Ashes was all the rage about a half a dozen years ago, it was an Oprah Book Club selection if I remember right. Not exactly light reading, in fact, it's kind of a downer. It was so popular that there was a sequel. The sequel was awful, I don't think I waded through more than a few pages before I tossed it aside.adajh588 said:I've never heard of Angela's Ashes but how can a book on child abuse be funny...never mind I'll read it and find out.
You've got to admit there were moments of humour in it. If it was unremettingly grim, it would have been unreadable.sticky_keyboard said:Angela's Ashes was all the rage about a half a dozen years ago, it was an Oprah Book Club selection if I remember right. Is this the book? Well, until we all decide for sure...

Beyond the Indian hamlet, upon a forlorn strand, I happened on a trail of recent footprints. Through rotting kelp, sea cocoa-nuts & bamboo, the tracks led me to their maker, a White man, his trowzers and pea jacket rolled up.....

looked at it in the book shop...bored me shitless and i couldn't stay focussed enough to read past page one.Boobyprize said:How is everyone getting on with Cloud Atlas? Just a bump to see who's reading it! I'm just over half way through...

writing style just wrong for me.
my brain's on spin cycle at the moment. reading isn't an option.Boobyprize said:if you can get it from the library Dolf, i'd say persevere. each segment has it's own unique writing style and even language. the further i'm reading, the more i'm liking it...
