This was the day Raquel was dreading, made worse by the text message from the Director to come in two hours early.
It was completely dark when Raquel arrived at The Lot and a glance at her watch told her that she was thirty minutes early. It was the normal for her and as it turned out, which didn't surprise Raquel, it was also the norm for the Director to not be here yet. Lights were off and the parking lot was dark and shadowy but it didn't trouble the young woman. Instead it calmed her growing annoyance at her unprofessional director's attitude and nature.
Well prepared for the delay Raquel returned to her car and popped the trunk grabbing the lantern and accordion folder there. She had been hired as the assistant director, a rather big job for her first in the field but Raquel was confident that she could handle it and was even looking forward to the challenge and lessons she would encounter under the watchful teaching eye of the director. What she got was a neglectful man who paid more attention to the female bodies on The Lot then his job. As a married man one would have thought that he would be more involved with his job but that wasn't so. He was the kind of man that passed on all the work to Raquel and claimed all her hard work and sleepless nights as his own.
The lantern flickered on balanced on the suv's dashboard, illuminating the cab and the piles of papers, books and boxes that Raquel had needed since taking this job. In her lap and spread across the passenger's seat was the manila folders of her greatest challenges.
HONK HONK HONK
The sun had come up nearly twenty minutes ago making the total of the time Raquel had spent waiting forty-eight minutes, a record in that it didn't exceed sixty minutes.
"You coming!" Shane Brothers hollered as he unlocked all the door that were barred to her.
"Of course." Raquel sing sang as she and the other assistant directors filled into the main building.

"Oh my gosh I can't wait!" Sabrina squealed bouncing on the balls of her feet because she was that excited.
Perhaps for a normal girl getting an eye full of a dozen male models this would be a day worth dreaming about but for Raquel it was a nightmare and the last place she wanted to be. Just thinking about it threatened to give her a headache. 12 primadonnas all fighting over the bathroom mirror paired with the messiness of males in general scared her.
Maybe it was just her prejudice against screen actors verses live stage actors that had her feeling this way about a group of people she hadn't even meet yet. But she couldn't help it no matter how hard she tried to change the way she felt about this whole situation. She had graduated from Yale's school of drama with multi degrees all directed with the purpose of working on Broadway.
"Aren't you excited?" Sabrina asked turning around to look at Raquel forgetting for a moment who she was talking to.
Sabrina was a pretty little blond with a huge smile and an up beat personality that seemed to always keep her in a good mood. So to say that she was a little slow was mean but also a little true. She always meant good but not matter what she did there was something missing in some form or another. As a person that was fine, as the 2ed-2ed it left something wanting.
"No. I'm not." Raquel sighed as Shane walked into the room staring at his phone.
"You two." He waved his pointer finger at the two of them. "I need you to get to H2T."
"H2T?" Head to Toe was the hair, make up and wardrobe department. "Is there something wrong?" Raquel racked her brain and quickly ran down the supply list hoping that she hadn't forgotten anything when she picked up the artistes' needed lists for ordering.
"There will be if the two of you aren't there before the first face gets here." Was all Raquel got before he left the room.
"What do you think is wrong?" Sabrina asked a worried frown crinkling her forehead.
"Best way to find out is to head over there." Raquel shrugged taking the far exit and fastest way to H2T.

"I can see what they are all talking about now." Neil sighed clicking his tongue. "First day of school and this is what you're wearing?" He asked the question like he wanted an answer but didn't give either girl a chance to answer. "You, Bri darling, you're almost human. Hair works as does the make up. Lissa!" Alyssa his assistant stepped out from behind a rack of clothes. "Take her." He pushed Sabrina towards the ex-model before circling Raquel.
"Will you stop that!" One circle was easy to ignore but after the second then third Raquel had to put a stop to it. "What's going on here?" But her words did little to stop the circling shark.
"We got word that we ALL need to be shiny new pennies for the faces."
"No, no, NO!" Raquel was already shaking her head knowing full well that she would be helpless in face of what was to come.
"That's right..." And all around Neil like evil minions the rest of the H2T crew materialized. "Make OVER!"
And like that the nightmare was complete.

"This is like the best day of my life!" To say that Sabrina glowed was as obvious as Raquel's frown. "You look hot!" Bri whistled as she too circled around her friend.
"I feel like a defenseless swimmer in a sea full of sharks." Raquel was trying to erase the last hour of being pulled on, plucked at and shoved into.
"What?"
"Nothing." Raquel sighed pulling on the sequin top that she had been forced in. "I swear if I wasn't getting paid so good."
"Are you!?!?" Sabrina squawked.
"No." There was only one reason she was putting up with this and that was because she needed the experience and this was her foot in the door. "But there has to be some reason I'm wearing this ridiculous outfit."
"Better then what you were wearing." Sabrina shrugged missing or not caring that this wasn't at all Raquel's style.
Neil and his horde of demons had managed to calm and straighten Raquel's wild curls, slapped make up on her face that brightened and brought out the honey in her eyes, a pinkish nude on her lips that smelled like candy as well as tossed the clothes that she had showed up in with what they had on hand. All this was finished off with heels and accessories that no matter how many times they all denied it, Raquel was fixed in thinking this was planned all along.
"Oh look! The first limo is driving up."
Yes limos for each face. Shane didn't want them to think they weren't appreciated for their natural beauty, talents and brains. The last one was pushing it but hey, simple math is an accomplishment.
