There's absolutely no reason why both can't and do happen within the venue of "rough sex" dulcie. That doesn't mean exclusively rough nor should be mean exclusively gentle. It's what fits the particualr mood at the time for those involved. Familiarity breeds boredom and mixing according to mood and agreement solves that, right? *s

As for the sub being 'in control' I agree and disagree.
Any couple entering into a BDSM relationship should always complete a Lifestyle checklist and sit down and discuss each and every item on it with total honesty to set hard limits and understand those unfamiliar things will be slowly tried several times to let the submissive determine where the 'new activity' falls and if it becomes a hard limit or not. Then, for at least the first year it should be redone at least every three months for things change very rapidly in the beginning.
Once that is done then submission is given to the Dom/me and the BDSM relationship becomes a fact of their life together for them as they thoughtfully laid the ground work and the Top (Dom/me) is now the dominant one in the releationship.
Safe words, caution words (I don't want you to stop, but that particular area needs a break for a bit, so please do it someplace else) should always be used until the Top knows the submissive and their limits very well indeed and it should be a word not commonly used in conversation. I, personally, use a citrus fruit. Tangerine and lime are common and familiar words so easy to remember, but rarely used in normal conversation as a for instance. *chuckling* Besides, I am from Florida after all.
All that said, and when I hosted several Lifestyle chat rooms this was discussed several times, the the ultimate power in the relationship lies in the submissive's hands for they can leave it at anytime and there's not a thing the Top can do about it if the submissive has made up their mind and is determined to leave. For sure on the Beauty series.... gets very deep in places and has a whole story turn around! As for Exit to Eden... it's a story like situation which follows a woman full circle from beginning to end.
