A question about story tags "index"...

I tried searching for the answer to this in the story tag FAQ, but I either missed it, or it's not there.

If you go to the Story Tag search page, you will notice a huge list of tags. Some of them are much larger than others.

My question is:

Are the larger tags showing up big like that because more people SEARCH for that specific tag?
Or is it because there are more stories CONTAINING that specific tag?

If anyone knows for sure, I'd appreciate the feedback!

p.s. I am ASSUMING it is the latter, and that it is based on how many stories contain that specific tag (within the time period specified).

Yes, the tag cloud font size is based on the number of stories that utilize it. You can see that when you filter by category and some of them get smaller or larger as a consequence, based on how common they are in said category.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm... 87% sure it's the latter.

The tag cards come in three distinct sizes. "gang bang" is the smallest size, "gangbang" is the middle size, and "gay" is the largest size. I think -- I am pretty sure -- that the smallest-size tags have 10-49 pages of stories, the medium size has between 50-99 pages and the largest size has 100+, at least when filtered by all categories/all time.

Funny how in 2025, people no longer recognize tag clouds and what they signify. They were all the rage in late 2000s and early 2010s, but the shift of content from self-hosted websites to social media has all but killed them.

Nothing of value was lost, thankfully; they are exceedingly poor representation of the info they're supposed to convey.

At least it’s a chance to find a half-finished and poorly received story by a now-deceased author who posted last time in 2010, but the one that scratches your particular combination of fetishes. Go on and try to do that with social media feeds.

Yeah, that's basically what I assumed, but wanted to clarify. Thanks for validating my thought! (Although I DO wish there was a way to find out what are the most popular searches in any given category!)

I don't know much about that... but I've never done much with tags prior to Lit. I don't mind them though. Actually, I think they're a little helpful to narrow down a sub-category you might want. Like maybe a person wants Lesbian Sex, but specifically that involves Anal Sex. It might be hard to find without the tag!

Yes, the tag popularity is based on the tags authors' use. The bigger the font, the more the tag is used.
Thank you!

You can also see it by just clicking on tags of different sizes and seeing directly the number of stories so tagged.

The larger tags are almost certainly based on how many stories use that tag (not how often they’re searched). It’s a visual representation of popularity/volume within the platform’s library like a tag cloud.

So yeah, your assumption’s spot-on: bigger tag = more stories labelled with it. If it were search-based, you’d probably see fluctuations based on trends, but these seem pretty static.
