just checked my story for the first time in a few weeks.

last time it stood at 4.20 with 98 votes.

it now stands at 4.18 with 98 votes???

any ideas where the odd couple of decimal points fucked off to.

bloody silly voting, can't help checking it though can you.

I can offer two possibilities.

One is somebody voted twice and periodically Laurel waves her hand and these double votes disappear.

Alternatively, the scores go up before the number of votes cast do. So you get the score in advance of the number of votes changing. This means somebody didn't give you a five.

The most likely explanation is that Laurel went through and did her periodic purge of bogus votes -- removing one or more votes from your total.

Before you returned to check your votes, an equal number of votes were added back to your total by new voters.

I just read and voted. It's lengthy, well-written, sweet and romantic even when uncomfortably realistic.

Maybe putting a link to that specific story on your sig will help the computer challenged locate it?

Maybe Laurel came along and saw that somebody had voted twice, giving you two identical votes, and deleted them. Then two individuals came along and each voted, giving you a vote of one less that the duplicate votes had been.

98 x 4.20 = 412 412 - 5 - 5 = 402
402 + 4 + 4 = 410 410/98 = 4.18
The numbers are rounded off to the nearest 100th.

This doesn't have to be two fives and two fours, of course, as long as the two new votes totalled 2 less than the two that were deleted.

ouch! had not thought of that...

just had my first story accepted and am glad to learn how these things fluctuate, although it does not seem like the end number is a totally true depiction of how your stories are received. but i have given up on thinking such honesty still exists outside of my own realm of control! thanks for the insight!
