Dawn was breaking over the horizon, letting the first rays of sunlight creep across a small village on the plains. A few cautious heads peeked out of the houses, all their eyes filled with sleepless fear, not a single villager had slept soundly this last night, the roar of dragons had seen to that.
The village, along with all the surrounding areas, had been tormented by a dragon dor as long as any could remember, it would steal a few livestock here and there, break a building every now and again, and very rarely, gobble up some villagers. On the other hand, young and ambitious adventurers always came seeking glory for slaying the beast, and the money they spent before running off to die easily made up for any losses, but just under a month ago, that changed.
The dragon began ignoring the countryside and all the other villages within its territory, instead focusing just one, it terrorized them unendingly, every day it would attack their farmers, kill livestock, it even came in to the town every now and again and caused havoc. To make things worse, the news that their dragon was rampaging all the time scared off all the would be slayers, meaning they didn’t even have that source of easy income anymore.
In the end, they sent word out that whoever could kill the beast, or somehow stop it from wiping them all out, would be rewarded with everything the town had. At first it brought no takers, with the exception of a few fools that did little good, but after a week, their saviour arrived. She had been met with little enthusiasm, and left immediately once the deal was confirmed to be legitimate, the villagers assumed that she would die like the rest.
Instead, they were treated to the sounds of great dragonic roars echoing down from the mountains, they were chilling to the bone, and just when it sounded like they were done, a tiny plume of smoke and fire would arise in the night and it would begin again, but now? Now all was quiet, not even the hens dared crow to signal dawns light.
The silence was broken by the sound of hooves, slowly plodding along the dirt road as a darkened figure lead a horse through the villages main gate. The heads peaking out disappeared for a moment, whispered words quickly being exchanged behind closed doors, then as the figure came further in, a cry rang out from somewhere “It’s her!”
Doors and windows flew open, the entire village scrambling outside to see for themselves, the figure was the same woman who had come just before nightfall the day before, she was a rather tired looking woman, covered in deep blue and red armour crafted from the hides and scales of her past kills. One hand held a heavy looking bloodied sack over her shoulder, the other held the reins of a large warhorse, covered in armour that matched its mistress, dragging behind it two massive, decapitated dragon heads.
She looked up, her weary eyes gazing at the quickly gathering crowd with a look of anger “You have returned” an elderly man said as he walked out in front of the crowd, the mayor of the village or something, she didn’t care, all she knew is he was the one meant to pay her “And you are victorious”
She shot him a look of pure malice as he got to close, the murderous gleam in her eyes telling him that if he got any closer he wouldn’t live to tell the tale “You said there was one” she said in a dry voice, the act of talking hurt her parched throat “but there was more” the mayor went to talk, but as soon his moth opened she cut him off “a lot fucking more” she threw the sack at his feet, smaller copies of the dragon heads being dragged by her horse tumbling out. “A breading pair of dragons, with a newly hatched litter” the look of fury in her eyes was deadly, if there was enough light for anyone other than the mayor to have seen it they would have all run away again.
“A noble deed you have done champion” the mayor said, trying to ignore the heads at his feet “I’m sure you can regale us all with the tale at the feast in your honour, but first, you surly must need rest” A feast? She didn’t want any gods dammed feast, she wanted her money so she could leave, but when she heard the word rest, the fight went out of her, her shoulders slumping in defeat as she muttered the word ‘fine’ as loud as her failing voice could handle.
“Come” he said, moving in to help her walk, but she still had enough in her to give him a death stare that changed his mind, allowing her to walk along and follow under her own power “you can use my house as if it were your own, my daughter shall see to your needs as I prepare for tonight’s feast”
