John Two-Feathers, along with two other young warriors, Bobby Broken Arrow and Charlie Blue Jacket watch and listen to Chief Soring Eagle. The chief stood in the middle of the Long House used for special ceremonies. Behind him, stood the three young women who had come to live with them many moons ago.
They were found wandering in the hills, lost and disoriented when the tribe found them. They were separated from their parents when a rival tribe attacked their settlement. The three girls were scared that they would be killed but Chief Soring Eagle had told his warriors to not harm them. The tribe brought the young frightened girls to the village and put them in the care of the elderly tribal women. Chief Soring Eagle made them a promise they would not be harmed and over time their disappeared as the tribal women taught them the ways of the tribe.
The young pale-faced girls were taught the ways of the tribe. They learned from the other women on how to handle the daily chores and over time the girls became more comfortable with the tribe. They also became mature beautiful women and some of the other young tribal women were envious of their beauty. And while some of the tribal women were envious, the young tribal males privately lusted for an opportunity to have them as a companion.
Chief Soring Eagle, knowing the women were becoming more beautiful, knew that someday the young women would need companions. The chief met with the tribal council and with their blessing, it was decided the time had come for the women to have a companion. It was the hope of the tribal council that the young women would, with the help of their tribal companion, mix their bloodlines for future tribal children.
It was decided by the tribal council that the three best warriors would each select a young woman as companion. The warriors were instructed they needed to agree to certain terms when selecting a companion. They were to treat them with dignity and with their coupling they would mix their bloodlines for future tribal
The three warriors stood in front of the chief and the young women. They listened to Chief Soring Eagle tell them it was time for them to take a companion. The three warriors looked at each other and then at the three women. Who would be the first to select a companion?
The women wore the traditional two-hide dresses made from deer or elk with front and back pieces sewn together and then draped together at the shoulders. Each of the women wore glass seed beads and they each created their own intricate geometric or floral yoke designs. There was no doubt that even with the dress and beads, the womanly features were on full display. The warriors were also aware of what some of the tribal women said when they witnessed the three women naked and washing naked in the nearby stream. There were also rumors from some of the tribal men who happened to spy on all the women as she cleaned themselves in the stream.
John Two-Feathers looked at the three women. He knew they had come over the ocean and there was talk amongst the tribal women they were Irish/English because of their reddish and brown hair highlights. They also spoke with a voice that some of the tribal men heard when they went to the fort for provisions.
The youngest one had the brightest red hair of the three. The second oldest woman had brown hair with a tint of red highlights. But the oldest of the three had deep brown hair and there was talk amongst the tribe that she was not really related to the other two. But there was no doubt the three women had facial and body features that were very similar.
John Two-Feathers was still staring at the three women wondering how they were to be selected when he saw Chief Soring Eagle look at the three warriors and with a smirk, asked “So, who will take the youngest, Blaanid?”
John Two-Feathers saw the hesitation on the other two faces and was quick to respond, "I'll take her."
The Chief nodded his approval, "Take your companion. She is yours to protect and to love," he said and they both knew what the chief meant when he said to love her. John Two-Feathers a certain flush rush through his veins as he reached out, offering his hand to the young and beautiful Blaanid.
