A Troll's Life

I'm reading a collection of letters a famous author and famous editor exchanged. Even the very best writers get harpooned by idiot reviewers. And some decent books get disemboweled by excellent critics.

Maxwell Perkins said it, and I agree: Some things are not our cup of tea. In this instance a story he rejected was snatched up by a rival publisher and won an O'Henry Award. Other editors have fessed-up to the same blunder, but most hide behind the myth that they make their choices based on quality rather than personal taste.
