Is there a way to avoid ingrown hairs? I'm not referring to a post shaving ingrown hair, but just a random ingrown hair in the labia. By the time I even notice that there is one, it's usually fairly big because, well, I'm pretty fleshy down there and there's lots of room for a small zit to hide.

Other than just random inspections and poking around, anything I can do?

You're not shaving and you're getting ingrown hairs?

Well, I'm getting something that stops up and forms a zit and often, a hair also comes out when I squeeze it to get rid of it, so yeah, I'd say they are ingrown hairs.

Hmm... I would always suggest exfoliation but use something with bigger granules like salt rather than sandy textures to avoid the irritation. Maybe rub it with a body brush... Not much help

Yep, I know this problem well - I also got ingrown hairs on my puss, underarms, legs, arm...and I've even had one on my tummy! It's have natural cycle of a hair --> it grows (different hairs grow to different lengths), it stops a while (different hairs live longer than others) and then it dies and falls out. So, even if you're not shaving, new hairs are still having to pop through your skin on a regular basis (just a little more often if you shave).

There are creams and lotions which are supposed to stop ingrown hairs, but I'd not use them anywhere near my vagina. I'm sure they'd cause an irritation. I suggest gentle daily exfoliation - use one of those body gloves while you're in the shower.

I'd also avoid squeezing them - you're likely to damage that hair folicle and so it will become prone to producing an ingrown hair.

Go WITH the grain, not agin it.

agin:verb; redneck slang meaning "against".

Or pluck them out. That'll learn 'em. You do nothing and they'll think they can just grow as they please.

I get 'em sumthin' fierce on my forearm. I drive my my arm on the window and I guess thats what does it. Friggin bump patch under my arm. I got sick of it so I got busy with the tri-biotic for a few days and once they were nice and ripe, tweezed those lil fuckers.

Like a brand new forearm now. :D

If possible, have your doc or a dermatologist check it out next time you get one. It may very well be caused by something other than an ingrown hair, like bacteria, and a topical antibiotic might stop it in its tracks and treat it.

I get something like what you're describing periodically, my doc saw it while she was doing my pelvic exam, and the ointment she prescribed clears it right up when it first starts.

For ingrown hairs, exfoliation is critical, so maybe you can rub that area with a small loofah, exfoliating gloves, or similar. When one starts to appear, try applying a hot washcloth to open the pores, blotting it dry then dabbing on tea tree oil or a cream with a lower concentration of salicylic acid (in some acne creams) to exfoliate and kill bacteria that's building behind it.
