Alternate world where patriarchal religions never rose and the role of the witch is a highly respected one. Magic could be real or not. I thought it would be fun to play with stories in a world like this where there’s less taboos around sex and it’s a bit more matriarchal.

So how do we get to the sexy stories?

Well: 1. If you want to get married you have to get the blessing of the local witch. Witch’s don’t mind blessing the union regardless of sex, gender, or number of members but you and your partners have to show you know each other intimately and the witches are here to help.

2. Since being a witch is so respected, there’s “witch hunts” but unlike the horrifying ones of our world, they are more on the spot checks and tests applicants must go to. Sometimes it’s helping a cow give birth, other times it’s being asked to strip naked and commune with the spirits on the spot

I like this and perhaps the town wise woman/witch/shaman is also the local matchmaker.
But rather than teaching manners and such, she uses magic to find out just how compatible the pair are. Emotionally, personality-wise and sexually. Sometimes, the magic requires certain ceremonies and incantations that are best done naked beneath the full moon. She teaches them how to please each other and her potions and salves make everything as satisfying as possible.
She is of the mind that a couple who are sexually competant and compatible will figure out the rest of it on their own.

You don't need alternative history, just come to Latvia! We love our witches... despite anything and like we it or not, all the beloved girls are witches, at least a little bit. Especially grammar and literature teachers... it's said to be impossible not to become a witch in that profession...

Anyway, seriously. The "pagan" (with isn't true, we never use word God in plural) godkeeping survived the eight centuries of Christian occupation in peasant kitchen and sauna... especially sauna with is our true temple (and clothing is prohibited there, and so are titles), but the twenty first century depopulation of countryside may yet finally make a killing blow... as...

She's not really a witch if she hasn't bathed in morning dew in riverbay meadows at sunrise after midsummer night (with is barely 6 hours here, sunset to rise, with full light an hour before, it doesn't really even get truly dark) naked of course (and yes, those mornings may see frosts sometimes, all the way to midsummers), at very least hasn't weaved her triple nine wildflower crown (with symbolize virginity, but midsummer night all girls and women wear it, as no marriage is in effect that night...)

So yes, we exist, or existed... backed in independent homestead lifestyle basically unchanging for 6000 years it once upon a time was dominat in large swathes of Europe but almost completely erased. Yet... you wouldn't really get the significance of frontline in Ukraine, and why it's a clash of civilizations and not "brotherly nations" and so on without that angle... but that's not in place here so I have to apologize.

Kiki's Delivery Service is one of my very favorite comfort movies 😍
Love that movie! Also, highly recommend Witch Hat Atelier, the manga has been published for a while but the anime just started and is a fantastic adaptation so far (captures the wonder and horror of magic and beauty of the world…and also makes Qifrey hot as fuck…I want him to ruin me like he ruins his friendships)

She has to evaluate their abilities ... personally.

No one is ever sure who fathered a witch's child. Which they find desirable.

One witch is annoyed with the old ways, because everyone thinks they got it all figured out. The witching establishment uses magic and questionaires and alchemy to determine people's compatibility on a love level. But this witch thinks that it's also important they're sexually compatible, too. Something the old order found too gauche and unimportant, because love was much deeper than base animal needs. Humans are evolved beings after all, and the goddess gave them reason so they did not have to rely on animal urges.

So she starts her own practice, maligned by the establishment, where she brings in couples and has them fuck in front of her while she evaluates them on several key metrics: eye contact, dialogue, closeness, synchronicity of orgasm, mutuality, etc.

After a while, people realize this witch has much higher success rates for unions than the establishment, which is when Big Magic tries to shut her down. But the people won't have it, they love their plucky young witch! Think George Bailey vibes at the end, everyone rushing to her aid to help keep her practice afloat.

Willow Rosenberg(Alyson hannigan ), Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka)Spellman and so many others are just fucking hot. I mean, shouldn’t be hard to write an attractive witch character.

Sure, but you're competing with Thorne Smith's The Passionate Witch, which became the movie I Married a Witch.

For a darker take you could check out Fritz Leiber's brilliant Conjure Wife.

pretty sure that's the premise behind Motherland: Fort Salem.

No.

I CONSUMED it 😁

It pains me so that I'll never get the sheer joy of reading another Pratchett book for the first time 😞

Someone, someday will invent a drug that causes temporary amnesia as a side effect and fiction fans will end up in the ER en masse for trying to experience their favorite stories again.

Aren't a lot of books I'd do that for but a handful of movies definitely. Maybe if I were more into mysteries I'd have a long list.
