Allison McPhee slowly drove her mother’s Mercedes up the snowy incline to her parents’ house. It had snowed most of her trip from Denver and had taken about an hour longer to get from DIA to the large house along the mountains in Colorado Springs. The weather had only worsened her mood; she had planned on spending her Christmas break on the beach in Santa Monica instead of a snowy three weeks in Colorado.
As she crested the hill, the utility vehicle’s bright lights flashed against her parents’ house. The lights were on in the living room, as well as a lone light appeared on the second floor, her brother, Sam’s bedroom. The whole reason she was here in the beginning of a blizzard, rather than on the beach in LA, she thought.
Sam had turned eighteen in October and in Allison’s mind should be more than capable of taking care of his self. Instead, Allison’s parents had called her just after Thanksgiving, informing her that she would be home for the Christmas break. Allison had protested, trying every excuse she could think of, but her mother had firmly expressed her desires, in the tone that Allison knew that even Doug wouldn’t be able to battle.
The real reason that Allison had been so intent on staying in California was that she had recently begun dating Kevin, a post grad who was attending the same law school at UCLA that Allison was prepping to attend. She had tried to call him when her plane had landed in Denver; he had dropped her off at LAX and she had thought about the going away sex they had had that morning the whole flight. However, his phone had gone straight to voice mail and she had been anticipating the moment she would arrive at home so she could try to call him again.
The garage door opened as she navigated the vehicle into the garage and parked next to her father’s red roadster. Stepping out of the car, she stepped over a fresh chunk of snow that had fallen off the vehicle and landed in her path as she walked to the open garage door and looked out. Her parents’ house was nestled on the western side of the city and had a fantastic view of lights as they stretched out to the plains in the east. The wind was cold as it whistled through the trees below the house and Allison shivered, realizing that the red Guess flannel blouse was more appropriate for the temperature she had left in LA than the freezing temperatures she was currently experiencing in Colorado.
Quickly she opened the trunk and pulled her out her suitcases. She had traveled light, the two cases mainly contained essentials, as her winter clothing was in her closet in her room. As she opened the door to the house, she basked in the warm air that traveled past her into the colder garage.
Wheeling the suitcases through the mudroom and into the kitchen she noticed that the light was on over the island separating the kitchen from the family dining area. “Sam,” she called loudly, not expecting a response. She figured that her brother was more than likely engrossed in Call of Duty or some other video game with his headphones on.
She opened her IPhone and quickly dialed Kevin’s number. As she listened to the phone on the other end ring, she grabbed a gallon of milk out of the refrigerator. Frowning when Kevin’s voice announced that he was not currently available, she pressed end and reached up to grab a tall glass. Sliding the phone in her back pocket, she headed through the house and up the stairs to the bedrooms.
She stopped at the landing to take a large drink of her milk. Against the wall was a full length mirror and while she sipped the cold liquid she studied herself. Taking the glass away from her mouth, she giggled softly at the milk mustache she had accumulated above her rose colored lips; thinking of the ‘Got Milk’ commercial.
The girl that faced her in the mirror stood five foot four and was curvy in all the right places. Her goldenrod hair hung down between her shoulder blades and was swept back from her face. A pair of square framed glasses magnified her green eyes. Her body was tanned from the California sun; and she turned slightly to admire her own taut shapely bottom, her best feature she thought. Taking another sip of her milk she turned and continued up the steps to the hallway.

She figured that a turn at Call of Duty would make her forget her Kevin issues, so she bypassed her own bedroom and headed straight for Sam’s room. She and Sam had always had a strange relationship. She truly liked her brother, but a lot of the things he did mystified her. He was her almost polar opposite; she was outgoing and participated in activities year around, cheerleading, debate, sports, and community activites, while Sam seemed to be more introverted, content with his video games, music and comics. They were both smart, and she thought her brother was handsome, but their social circles never seemed to cross. Though she thought, he was a freshman when she was a senior, when they were alone together they were good friends; playing video games, or one on one basketball.
She smiled as she approached his door. A thin light ebbed out from the bottom of the door and she listened for a moment, hearing his radio playing softly and she knew he was probably zoned into his game. She hoped he was ready for a big sister beating at his favorite console game. She turned the knob and opened the door to her brother’s room.
