American Idol

when was it aired, I missed it
and tbh, i prefer our brit versions - the one thing I don't agree with now is where they allow the audience to chant and deride the performer, think it was in X-factor maybe? or brit's got talent. THAT is unacceptable, imo. too much pandering to the audience's lust for the circus.

It was on last night. A 2 hour special.

I think that as there is a very lengthy selection process, pre anyone getting in front of camera, it says a lot about who is chosen and why. If it were just those who thought they were better than they are that passed that process, then that would be fine. But it isn't. Instead some seriously unwell folk are chosen. I am not attacking you personally, I think it says a lot more about society as a whole, rather than any individual

In the early part of the nineteenth century we would pay a penny to go and laugh at the lunatics in the asylums....now we watch X Factor....JMO
that's ok, I don't think you're attacking me personally. I do however think your view is a little limited in scope. But that's why we're all individuals. It's ok to hold different opinions.

in general, I think there's something of an inverted snobbery attached to the attitudes some have about these shows. NOT everyone. of course. And we all have that choice to change channels.

thankyou :)

I love American Idol. Guilty pleasure I guess. I watch a lot of reality tv.
(slinks into the corner and looks humiliated)

I dont consider myself a big fan of the show but i love the tryout ones...they are funny and sometimes very touching.
Of course they only air the ones that will inspire ratings but the people trying out know what they are getting in to and they want their 15 minutes of fame.
I stop watching when it gets down to the popular vote cause as someone said earlier it is not about talent it is about popularity.

no reason at all why it ought to feel a guilty pleasure.
i'm sure you aren't watching it to delight in the 'mentally or physically challenged', and tv does cost rather more nowadays ;)

these programmes are not inherently evil, though I also sure we're no naive enough to understand producers will pull tricks out of the hat in order to garner views and votes. If we speak out when we see something clearly 'wrong', then we can make ourselves heard. Or vote with out fingers by changing channel.

the point is, there is nothing to be ashamed of in watching and enjoying entertainment programmes.

some choose to watch 'you've been framed' - where kids fall over through negligence in some cases by parents! or 'kids do the funniest things'. or 'when sport goes bad'. or Jeremy Kyle.

there are aspects in all these shows that are distasteful, but we can still laugh and enjoy others.

I know they do. I just always feel like I should be watching "better tv" if there is really such a thing.

I dont think there actually is in the main, we don't get an awful lot of "quality tv" choice do we....

NPR usually has good programs if you look closer. I'm not a fan of commercials so DVR is a godsend.....save lots of time.

I like Simon on Idol despite hi sneers and snarls. His judging is usually correct and the show needs the good cop/bad cop combination. Surfing Lit while watching the show is the only way to do it.

That church goer Leah Laurenti (I hope I got the name right) has a good singing voice but she's too religious, and it will be a pity when many won't vote for her when she gets selected later for the voting rounds. Americans are just sick of over-religious people.

I'm not American. I'm an archangel. :rose:

Thanks Pervy.

The top 24 has been revealed. I think this year's competion is tougher than the previous years'.

Who is Chris Golightly?

I don't know who Chris is, sorry. I'll ask my daughter, she's like the American Idol trivia master.

Some of the eliminations really choked me up.

I do ADORE Ellen on this show though. WAY better than Paula ever was.

Chris GoLightly was supposed to be in the final 24, but he broke a rule. He was replaced by Tim Urban.

The AI we 've just seen was recorded about three months ago.
