Astrid Elizabeth Carlsson, 23 years old
"We're flying out in the morning, early," Devlin said, as Astrid entered his office carrying an armload of file folders.
"We are? Where are we going?" she asked, looking up at him as she leaned down to deposit the folders on the corner of his desk. The redhead wasn't sure if her boss, and new lover was simply joking with her or if he was actually serious.
"Miami. We'll spend the weekend at my beach house," Devlin answered as he leaned back in his black leather chair and pulled his reading glass off, placing them on the desk in front of him.
"We can't," Astrid protested as she stood up straight and placed her hands on her hips. "You have work that needs to be done by Monday, and besides, I don't think it would be a good idea for me to go on an overnight trip you right now. What if someone from the office found out?"
"I can finish my work at the beach house," the handsome, middle-aged man countered as he smiled up at his twenty-three year old assistant. "And I'm the boss, remember? If I want to take you to Miami with me, it's no one's business but mine."
Astrid smiled her acceptance and rolled her eyes as she did. She knew it wouldn't do any good to continue the argument. Once Devlin made up his mind, he didn't change it, or at least she hadn't known him to in the three months since she'd begun working in his office. After the first month he'd decided they should date, and so they did. It was the first real relationship Astrid had been in since college and she was still a little giddy about it all. At 41, Devlin was considerably older than Astrid, and older than any man she'd dated previously, but so far she was having the time of her life. He was strong, intelligent and intense, and the more time she spent with him the more she felt herself falling for him.
"You're the boss," she said, just a twist of sarcasm as she turned and started out of the office, glancing over her shoulder, a twinkle in her eye. "I'll try to remember that this weekend."
By the next morning, Astrid had not only dismissed whatever misgivings she had about going away with Devlin, she was practically giddy about the trip. They'd had sex for the first time on date number four, just over a month ago, but Devlin was a busy man and their opportunities to be alone together had been less frequent than the redhead would have liked. The prospect of a whole weekend alone together was exciting.
As she stepped away from the cab, pulling her wheeled suitcase behind her, Astrid's eyes found the tall, handsome Devlin standing next to the stairs that led up into the private plane. The look on his face said that there was something wrong, despite the smile he wore.
"What is it?" she asked as she neared him.
"It's my daughter," he answered. "Her mother had something come up and she couldn't get anyone to stay at the house on such short notice." As he finished speaking, Devlin looked up at the entrance to the plane. Astrid turned her head to follow his gaze and saw the teen girl standing at the top of the stairs.
Well, there goes my weekend alone, she thought as she plastered her best fake smile across her face and started up the small set of stairs.
