And the bigotry continues...

We in the UK, or rather the Labour Government, have nearly stopped sperm and egg donation dead. They now insist that any babies born as a result of a donation have the right to contact the donor parent after the baby reaches 18.

Would you like 2,000 18 year olds calling you 'Daddy'?

Og

Hi daddy.

Can I sit on your lap?

It sounded much better coming from me, baby.

:D
It sure did.

Though it wasn't exactly the line I had in mind. ;)

At first I was going to say "Who's your daddy?" but then I wouldn't have been able to sit in Og's lap.

Priorities, priorities.

Are we saying that a couple that has to use donor sperm should just take the luck of the draw? Or that they should have some say in where the sperm comes from?

If it's luck of the draw, then I suppose they should draw from a sample representative of all races and ethnicities, states of health, talents, and proclivites of the US population at large. That hardly sounds right.

If they should have some say in the origin of the sperm, then where do you draw the line? That they can choose for race but not for intelligence? That they can choose for intelligence but not for criminal history? That they can choose for eye color but not sexual orientation?

Does anyone go to a sperm bank and just take luck of the draw?

I can tell you from my own experience that the way my former wife and I did it, was to allow the doctor to select a few donors. We chose the one with the same racial and superficial genetics as ourselves. With out knowing his identity, we were given his IQ and college GPA average and the results of a recent physical and blood work at the time. I was allowed to speak to him over the phone and I was thrilled with the man.
On the fateful night, he came into the office and waited for us to arrive. He made his donation in one room and it was brought to another where my wife and I were waiting. The procedure was done and he got his money and left. I actually peeked out the window when he left to make sure it was the man we chose and it was.
I have a beautiful 16 year old daughter that has a 160 IQ and is near the top of her class.
Too bad her mother didn’t bother to hang around to see.

Of being fathered by a gay man or of taking an AIDS test?

Of just good ol fashioned discrimination for when a donor rocks up to donate sperm and is refused because he is gay :D

They are not seeking to identify high risk individuals [whether scientifically or not] but excluding a group of people.

I read an article somewhere about 2 blind lesbians wanting a blind child and were going about seeking a live 'donor' based on his hereditary disposition towards genetic blindness or something [I don't think they cared either way if the child was straight]. I thought this was wrong because I would want my child to be given every chance or headstart in life [or just to see a sunset or see thier mother's face etc] BUT it wasn't my choice to make, and I don't think it is parliament's either. Just because thier life MAY be easier, it doesn't mean that it will affect their quality of life in any way, and this applies to couples seeking sperm from a gay donor. Whether being gay is genetic is a different question. :D

Fifty years and seventeen doctorates later, the parents will be even more impressed when the kid proves to be too intelligent to countenance any of the prevailing business precepts, and therefor cannot get a job.

Since the kid cannot relate to average people, teaching, sales, and politics are out. The best he can manage is doing pro bona legal work for imprisoned Mensa members.

That's funny...sorta.

I know a person or two just like that.

Wouldn't it be interesting if two lesbians used a gay man's sperm *specifically* in hopes that there child be gay, but to their disapointment/against their expectations, their little boy grows up straight?

I don't know why- but that just seems like an interesting situation. Maybe that's becasuse I'm a writer. :cattail:
