Appeals court panel stops order to wind down ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ operations in Florida​

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A federal appeals court panel on Thursday put on hold a lower court judge's order to end operations indefinitely at the immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz."

The three-judge panel in Atlanta decided by a 2-1 vote to stay the federal judge's order pending the outcome of an appeal, saying it was in the public interest.

DeSantis said on social media Thursday, after the appellate panel issued its ruling, that claims that the facility's shutdown were imminent were false.

"We said we would fight that. We said the mission would continue," DeSantis said. "So Alligator Alcatraz is in fact, like we've always said, open for business."

Ron DeSantis, Florida’s Republican governor, spent $1.2m of taxpayers’ money per day to open and operate the notorious immigration jail known as Alligator Alcatraz, court records obtained by the independent investigative news website the Florida Tributary reveal.

A switch in position by Donald Trump’s administration also now looks likely to leave Florida on the hook for at least $608m spent on the harsh Everglades detention and deportation facility and other immigration jails, the outlet said. That was despite gloating by DeSantis in September that the state would be reimbursed from federal funds.
