Well, even though I don't like Microsoft to much (Pray to god Bill Gates don't read this) MSN Messenger has yet to give me any problems, it worked fine for me when I used Windows 98SE, and still works like a dream on Windows 2000. I have been using MSN for over a year, and only been kicked of when Microsoft do mantince.
ICQ, well besides the fact that it takes 11% of Windows system, resouces, on Windows 98SE it played up on me more then it worked. But, now I am using Windows 2000, ICQ works good, just slows down my computer alot. When I get my upgrade of 128 MB of RAM, it will work like a dream.
But still, I prefer MSN.

ICQ seems very awkward after using msn for a year, can't have multi-user conversations, and is slow. I thought that it was the fact that I was used to msn and still having to learn something new, but it seems that lots of folks have the same problems.
I set ICQ up to talk to someone that had it and not msn, been trying to convice her to upgrade ever since.

Personaly I would only use ICQ under Windows 2000. MSN is easy to use, don't take much system resurces to run. And is under 1 MB download. Were ICQ is over 5 MB download and harder to use the msn. ICQ is more popular, but give me MSN over ICQ any day.

I must have just the best provider in the land cuz I dont have any of the problems with aol that i hear so much bout. *shrugs* Dont get me wrong It does gripe me on occasion with a few things but for the most part im doing just fine, & I met some of the most wonderful people ill ever meet in my life over AOL so I aint complainin bout it anytime soon. hehe.

You can set ICQ to multiple person chat. which is what it is. just like MSN you can make a chat invite and invite multiple people to join in.
oh and here's a little scary one for you all.....ICQ is a sub division of AOL.
Ever noticed who ICQ and AOL goes down at the same time Hmmm??? becasue they borh run off the same servers.
