It looks like this will be the first year in 18 that I am not working retail at Christmas. My wrist isn't getting healed as quick as it should and I will miss out on all the rush and hubub.... No, I didn't plan it that way. But you know what? I like the thought of relaxing and enjoying more of the season. Though, and this seems to be true with most retailers. Something happens when you close the doors Christmas Eve. You count out the till, sweep the floor and on the drive home you see all the houses lit and decorated. Unlike other nights when you are driving home after midnight to turn around and come back at 6 am. You see the people filing into their various churches. You actually willingly turn the radio on to Christmas music, and listen for the Santa watch. As you enter the house you start to feel better, it is over for another 6 months. But the truer feeling strikes you when you see the plate of cookies laid out and the warm milk. Read the Night Before Christmas and do all those last minute little things that make the morning so special.
You revel in the quiet of the house, maybe even dozing off in the chair till Santas arrival wakens us, and we scamper upstairs to hide.
But even after I write all that. I am happy to think I might actually not have to pander and slave to you all this season. Have to explain for the umpteenth time I have nothing to do with marketing and distribution. Not have to try so very hard not to say, the week before Christmas... where the hell were you 2 months ago when we were twiddling our thumbs and had full shelves?
So, as a favour to me and others on Lit who slave in retail. Give one smile to a cranky clerk this season. Please?
I will go away now and get some caffeine. I am rambling again.
