Cy strutted into the small country bar feeling like ten kinds of garbage. The last few days had been hard with her wrestling with her conscience. It was an old story but one that never failed to repeat itself. She had been hurt and badly by someone she had trusted, had begun to invest herself emotionally. When it blew up in her face, Cy became scared of letting anyone close again. She was just a simple country girl who wanted a connection with someone, something to weigh her down in the dizzying events of the outside world.
For the next years or so, she went from one guy to another, always finding some excuse to break things off before he could get too close. For the most part, she didn't even know she was doing it. The fear and the pain had put her in a very bad place. Then she had met someone new, a nice man that made her smile. It was almost cliche how excited she got whenever Cy saw him. There was a comfort there that she hadn't felt for a while. They got to know each other more and more. He didn't want anything permanent, was just looking for some fun. Cy was ok with that or at least she thought she was.
They had alot of fun together and he treated her pretty well. That was when she did something stupid. Cy began to avoid him, even cut him off from her email and cell phone. She never thought she could enjoy someone's company too much. Like always, she backed off before this guy could hurt her like all the others had. What she hadn't counted on was how much he filled her mind. That was why she was at the bar that night. Cy knew he had just gone through something major but he wouldn't talk about it with her. Then she went ahead and dumped him like a bad habit.
"Whiskey, Sam." The older gentleman was wiping down some glasses. "You sure, hun?" Cy just smiled sadly. "Yeah, I'm sure." They were old friends from way back. Sam knew not to bother her when she was like this. There was too much going on inside her head. As the amber liquid hit the back of her throat, burning the whole way down, she could help thinking about the man she had become so fond of and how much she wanted to hear him call her his 'lil one' again.
