MTV (originally an initialism of Music Television) is an American pay television channel owned by Viacom Media Networks (a division of Viacom) and headquartered in New York City.

Launched on August 1, 1981,[2] the channel originally aired music videos as guided by television personalities known as "video jockeys" (VJs).

 :(

Yup. All Hell broke loose.

T'was the beginning of the end.

The first video being Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles.

Also, the word 'Music' in its title meant something.

i'm honestly glad the music video era is over. too many got suckered in by flashy videos to shitty songs.

Do they still play music videos?

It went downhill after the OG TRL went bust.

i was done with mtv when they enabled that burnout jesse whatshisface for reasons that are completely beyond me.

also, nu metal.

i still judge people by whether or not they like(d) limp bizkit, korn or fucking linkin park.

I used to work graveyard shift back then. I would get home from work before the family was up and spend an hour unwinding in front of the TV. MTV made this the best hour of my day. Like most every guy in America, I had it bad for Martha Quinn, the quintessential girl next door. Good times.

I watched the launch. So much of the music was crappy, and the videos all look like they were made by my uncle Joey’s wedding video service, but it was fun.

Video killed the radio star.

Then reality shows killed the video channel.

I watched it a fair bit, but particularly when Dweezil and Moon Unit were the hosts.

Ah, yes

The graphic of the little astronaut planting a flag on the moon, was brand new.

The days of usenet and ASCII

When alt was worthy of affection, not scorn.

Portable phones the size of a brick.

they also cost a small fortune. of course, what didn't? i remember that when my father bought a camcorder back in the mid-80's it cost him nearly two grand.

unsurprisingly, he still had the fucking thing when he died. sadly, it no longer worked. i was mildly sad, but it wasn't like i was going to use the damned thing. it weighed a fucking ton and i gave my mother my only working vcr because i have no use for the fucking thing.

hey...

The only band that I was ever in that EVER showed REAL promise--broke up after a year.
