Awful Stuff.

I think my claim is pretty consistent with the number of masters and journeymen in every art, science, and sport. The odds are about 10,000 to ONE against paid employment.

So far as I know LIT doesnt pay for stories, and I dont need your validation.

You remind me of a LIT poster who pestered me to read a story I wrote. I advised the poster that they were welcome to read a story but I wasnt interested in a critique. So I sent the poster the file, then got a lengthy critique of the story back. The story involved a collision between some snakes and two girls. The poster assumed it was a sexual allegory. It wasnt. It was a story of two girls collecting wild orchids and their collision with two snakes fighting to the death.

I dont post to furnish shitwits with excuses to be delusional.

You should put that in your sigline. LOL.

Ya know, there's brilliant stuff and horrid stuff on Lit, just like there is on the NYT bestsellers list. For every amazing story I've read on here, I've clicked "back" a dozen times on some other that wasn't my cup of tea. I've admitted that my taste is somewhat obscure and left it at that. I don't think the majority of readers are looking for the brilliant stuff, they're looking for something which serves a momentary purpose. ;)

Naw, I'll stick with the probable truth that you don't write stories at all and haven't read any stories on Lit. at all and are just doing your usual "post something provocative and sit back in my Lazy Boy and stroke my cock to the rhythm of the fallout" pattern. From your history of posting, it's ridiculous to believe anyone contacted you to read and critique one of their stories. You offer up nothing but inflamatory crap unrelated to writing. You get off on posting inflamatory statements on AH, not only anything erotic.

What I find mildly amusing is that there are posters who will try to defend the stories on Lit. to you or who suck into your manufactured supposition that you've read any stories here and have any ability to differentiate between what is a good erotic story and what isn't.

In that sense, yes, there's one born every minute. :D

Youre right. I've come across a few stories that are excellent. They seem to vanish, though.

As a matter of fact I read stories on LIT and use them to practice editing.

I do the same with the Masters. I try to improve what they wrote.

Yeah, right. ;);)

In editorial terms, we refer to that as all telling and no showing.

The writing in the stories section is awful stuff.

Each story is all summary narration or total dialogue. The summary narration paragraphs are wads of loose associations, tangential remarks, and multiple subjects, viz., stream of consciousness composition a slice better than schizophrenic word salad.

My sample came from the most popular stories.

Let's see here... you're voluntarily reading stories on a website that features amateur writers, for the most part, who are not required to work with an editor or to go through anything like the normal publishing process to post porn stories for no pay... and you're complaining about the quality of the work?

Did I miss anything?

Until I read your last sentance I thought you had fallen to reading my stories.

As has been stated in this thread there are a lot of incredible works on this site just as there are a lot of terrible ones. Just like a book store. The nice thing is here we don't have to pay for the stories we read.

We get what we pay for.

Last night I read an old Mencken article about writers of fiction. He estimated the ratio of bad/good fiction at 1000/ONE.

That's probably generous. The combination of a good story and good prose is not an easy trick to pull off. It gets harder when you accept different readers also have different preferences.

I'm also not sure what you're using as a frame of reference. Arguing that the stories here don't match up to one of the masters is like moaning because the local pub soccer team got beat 10-0 by Manchester Utd.

It's an amateur site. The vast majority of the stories are not going to measure up to a professional benchmark, but the writers probably had fun writing them and there are plenty of readers out there who will have fun reading them, which seems to me to be what the site is for.

I never said amateurs should be masters.

I said the quality of the stories on this site is awful. Amateur status has nothing to do with how well you write.

True, but if someone does write high quality stories, then they're unlikely to remain an amateur for very long and then you wouldn't see their work here.

Personally I'd prefer to see one very good story amongst a hundred awful ones than walk into a bookstore and see five mediocre books that someone else has decided are the books we should all be reading this month.

If you think the standard of writing on Literotica is bad just have a look at some of the "stories" in Yahoo's adult groups...

I dont post stories and I dont make a habit of reading them; when I do read the stories I'm impressed with how universally bad they are. My question is: Is LIT a vanity ghetto for wannabees without basic writing skills? I suspect many people here believe it is.

Why not post a few. Help raise the level. That's what several authors were trying to do by critiquing and such on the Story Feedback forum.

My experience indicates that many readers derive a lot of pleasure from Lit stories.

Your comment about, 'wannabes' is offensive, at least it is the way i interpret your inference.

I'm still bemused as to why you're actually bothering to ask the question here. Unless of course you're simply stroking your own ego by provoking reaction.

Undoubtedly you're correct that some people will think that Lit is stocked with puerile crap, but I, for one, don't really give a fuck. There's a post above about Manchester United playing a pub team and winning ten - nil, well we can't all be Wayne Rooney, eh? So why not let us delusional types churn out shite for the uneducated readership here on Lit?

You never know, we just might be having fun.

I think my criticism touches a nerve with you.

Maybe LIT is a vanity ghetto where any shitwit who imagines they can write gets some attention.

Kwitcherbitchin, JBJ. Lit is merely another example of Sturgeon's Law: "Ninety percent of everything is crap." Yes, there are some truly horrendous examples of so-called writing on this site. There also also some few stories that are absolute gems, done with care, skill, and insight--and those are worth searching out and enjoying. Like anything worth having, it takes some effort.

Welcome to reality, JBJ! We hope you enjoy your stay with us. Also, we'd like to remind you to return your consciousness for a full refund--now, if possible, but certainly prior to your departure.

<snip> I agree. My one and last submission was edited by a person whose evident illiteracy and insistence was such that the prose, organization, punctuation and style were massacred; <snip>
If it's so godawful that you can see errors that need fixing, you can always submit an edit.
