A recent Fox News poll reveals that about two-thirds of American voters and parents back the idea of banning teenagers under the age of 16 from social media and removing cellphones from K-12 classrooms.

A new Fox News poll has shed light on the growing concern among American voters and parents regarding the impact of social media and cellphone usage on children. The survey, which involved interviews with 1,001 registered voters, found that 64 percent of participants favored banning social media for children under the age of 16, while 35 percent opposed the measure. Interestingly, the numbers remained consistent among parents, with 64 percent supporting the ban and 36 percent opposing it.

The poll results also highlighted a partisan divide on the issue, with 73 percent of Republicans backing the social media ban compared to 56 percent of Democrats. This suggests that while there is broad support for protecting children from the potential dangers of social media, Republicans are more likely to advocate for stricter regulations.

In addition to the social media ban, the survey asked participants about their views on banning cellphones in K-12 classrooms. A staggering 69 percent supported this idea, while only 31 percent opposed it. Among parents, 63 percent were in favor of the classroom cellphone ban, and 37 percent were against it. Once again, Republicans showed stronger support for the measure, with 81 percent backing the ban compared to 59 percent of Democrats.

For Politruk: Yes, it's Breitbart, but note the Fox News link, then cry harder. :D

Ron Emmanuel has been pushing banning social media for <=16 yrs old, pointing to Australia's ban as an example of success.

Where will you find your next victims?

Are the fake conservatives in the Republican Party testing social media access as an issue for the midterms?

Real conservatives have always been against “nanny state” regulations.

Australia recently enacted a ban, but they also regulate gun ownership so they’re a problematic example for MAGAs to promote.

They protect children as well as the Catholic Church.

How about age verification and parental controls over apps and websites on devices? There’s probably no single solution but that might be a quick way of helping parents who care about their kids protect them a little more effectively.

That ban just went into effect last week. Awfully early to determine whether it's been successful at anything but doing parents' job for them.

Teaching parents how to control their kids phones would be good.

Both apple and Google need better parental controls.

Sorry, I didn't mean successs in practice....but success in support and policy language.

Kids aren't adults. People who suggest their liberties are being trampled on aren't serious people. (General statement, not targeted at you)

Freedom of speech and the 1st Amendment as perceived by the party.
The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

Ban Teenagers From Social Media?

Ooh. A 21st Century version of a Canute courtier...

Is any reason given? WHY don't they want teens on social media? Is it just because they devote all attention to their phones when they should be listening to the teacher, or do pedos trolling for action figure into this somehow?

Texas attorney general Ken Paxson put the onus of age verification on porn site owners last year, correctly figuring most people wouldn't want to fax a copy of their drivers license to some rando porn site just to look at titties.

As Jeff Goldblum said in Jurassic Park, "I'm simply saying that life, uh... finds a way." and the VPN bidness is absolutely booming down here in Texas.

I would like to note that the Breitbart pearl-clutching rewrite of the Fox news poll is a tad disingenuous. The headline states overwhelming support for banning media from a generic "teenagers" which would lead someone to think that it encompasses ALL teenager (13-19 inclusive) when this is NOT the case.

The actual poll deals with a specific subset of teenagers, the so-called "Trump Targets", ages 13,14, and 15. The remainder (16 through 19) aka the "Too Old For Trump" demographic is not included.

I think most non-MAGA parents have a pretty good grasp of what their kids are doing online, and don't feel it is necessary to play Mommy/Daddy to young teenagers.

I don’t think Texas is the only state that’s done that, and I’ll bet you can still watch porn in your state.

That’s why I suggested prioritizing age verification and parental controls at the end point. Device manufacturers. Apple, Samsung, and perhaps around a dozen other phone, tablet and laptop manufacturers instead of countless thousands of app and website developers would go a long way toward making it easier for parents to make it harder for their socially and hormonally developing children to get sucked into dangerous and sometimes suicidal situations.

This isn’t about MAGA or non-MAGA parents. It’s not about Democrats or Republicans. It’s about finding sensible ways to help parents protect their kids.

The one sure cure, nuke the internet into oblivion. End of problem.

I repeat: WHY?

I remember when Bill & Opus' campaign promise was "Send Twitter back to Hell!"

I dont see this debate as a liberal vs conservative matter at all.
I see this as an parenting and peer-pressure issue.
I absolutely think social media does more harm than good in many areas, for men and women.
I quit facebook, twitter, insta after my stalking and subsequent sexual assault (a few years back), and dont miss it one bit.
For a younger person, between the AI or photoshop and impossible physiques of some people really shapes both men's and women's ideals of the perfect "specimen". Not to mention cyber bullying that can cause immense harm and potential suicides or some sort of revenge using physical violence (or via guns etc).
I have cautioned my brother to not allow his daughter (not yet a teen but getting there) to not give her access to tiktok, insta etc until around 15, 16 despite the enormous peer pressure to give a kid an iphone/android that ahs all those capabilities.

Sincerely,

Possibly be the youngest "semi-active" person on the political board...
