I can buy into the whole homophobe as closet homosexual but by and large i think this is becoming a thing of the past. Our way of life has become too fast for such things. these are the first generations where gay youth has a voice and places to go. Most of the high scools i attended in the mid 80's now have out reach programs,gay and lesbians characters have become media darlings in film and television and homosexual men and women have established themselves as power brokers in major industries. The closet is becoming a much smaller place and I see those that are locked into it as being as quiet about it as they can be without bringing attention to themselves..

I do believe that homophobes have sexual hang ups~but most people with a negative view towards sexuality tend to be bitter anyway.

May not sound nice saying it but the most common homophobes I see tend to be white men stuck in a different generation who are suddenly aware that thier status as the majority just isnt as important as it used to be.

I think you raise a very good point. Not all homophobia is the same.

I think there are basically two kinds of people we are calling homophobes.

One is the type I described, the repressed individual who hates in others what we fears most in himself.

The other is what we might call a political homophobe, who might not hold the same deep rooted emotional loathing for homosexuals, but detests us as a symbol because he sees us as symbolic of his own loss of social stature.
