I'm seeking 1-2 beta readers for a completed literary fiction novel, Cousins (~80,000 words). This is character-driven contemporary fiction exploring complex female relationships, class dynamics, desire, and family obligation. Contains mature sexual content and psychological complexity.

What I need from you:
  • Read the full manuscript
  • Identify what isn't working and why (be specific - quote the passage, explain the problem)
  • Provide actionable suggestions on how to fix it (not vague notes, actual solutions)
  • Focus on: character consistency, dialogue authenticity, emotional authenticity in intimate scenes, pacing, relationships that feel real
  • Be direct and honest - I don't want praise, I want clarity

What you get:
  • First read of completed work
  • Beta reader credit if published
  • Reciprocal beta reading if you're also a writer

Requirements:
  • You must have read literary fiction recently (can cite examples - contemporary women's fiction, character studies, relationship-focused work)
  • You're willing to give detailed written feedback (minimum 2-3 pages of notes)
  • Timeline: 4-6 weeks for completion
  • No fluff, no "it's great!" - I need specifics

How to apply: Reply with:
  • What literary fiction have you read in the last year (titles and authors)
  • One specific example of feedback you've given to another writer (what the problem was, how you explained it)
  • Why are you interested in reading Cousins specifically

Hi Lolita30,
Before you read any further and waste your time I'm going say that the more I tried to meet your criteria the more I realised I'm probably not the Beta Reader for you - so read on if you like but I'm doubtful it would work out.

That's quite a wish list you have and since I'm only a volunteer Beta Reader, not a professional, I'll answer your list of requirements and see how we go. Don't worry, I understand that you want the best for your work so if you don't think I fit the bill just let me know.

What I need from you:
  • Read the full manuscript - Yes, that's a given
  • Identify what isn't working and why (be specific - quote the passage, explain the problem) - I generally give in document comments and notes so each time I find something that's not working it would be linked directly to the part of the work needing to be reviewed and or fixed.
  • Provide actionable suggestions on how to fix it (not vague notes, actual solutions) I could certainly give actionable suggestions for solutions but at the end of the day only you will be able to actually fix any problems but I do try not to be vague when at all possible
  • Focus on: character consistency, dialogue authenticity, emotional authenticity in intimate scenes, pacing, relationships that feel real - Yes I can do that
  • Be direct and honest - I don't want praise, I want clarity - I can also do that since you're obviously completely open to it so no need to worry about sending you off into the corner to cry after you read my notes.

What you get:
  • First read of completed work - Yeah that's cool
  • Beta reader credit if published - Thanks that would be nice
  • Reciprocal beta reading if you're also a writer - Once we see how we work together - that would also be valuable

Requirements:
  • You must have read literary fiction recently (can cite examples - contemporary women's fiction, character studies, relationship-focused work) - I'm not fully sure what you're looking for here. I read extensively across all kinds of genres and types of fiction but most recently I've been focused, on erotica. I've read works from Jane Austen to Stephanie Brother and a lot in between.
  • You're willing to give detailed written feedback (minimum 2-3 pages of notes) - As I said above I tend to give in document feedback so notes as I find what did or did not work and suggested corrections. I'm not keen on separate notes so if this is a deal breaker then I'm not your Beta Reader.
  • Timeline: 4-6 weeks for completion - I should be able to meet this, naturally allowing for the fickle nature of fate and barring any calamities.
  • No fluff, no "it's great!" - I need specifics - I rarely tell people their stories are 'great' without some notes on room for improvement unless of course it is just great.

How to apply: Reply with:
  • What literary fiction have you read in the last year (titles and authors) - this last year had been mainly titles in the erotica realm so I'm not sure if you'll classify them as 'literary fiction'. A Triplet series by Stephanie Brother,
  • One specific example of feedback you've given to another writer (what the problem was, how you explained it) - Have recently worked with a writer who had too much exposition and helped provide examples of where dialogue could be used to break it up. I've workshopped with @Oedipus67 recently on a work in progress to try to thrash out the motivations of the mom and son in an incest story - they might be prepared to give feedback on my help.
  • Why are you interested in reading Cousins specifically - I love reading and the title caught my attention but I also love helping writers get their work out into the world in the best way it can be presented and the themes mentioned in your post appealed. Being a woman and one of three sisters the idea of exploring female dynamics appeals.

thanks.

Just to clarify... This is a novel that you want to publish for profit, not a story you wish to publish on Lit?

Because that kind of changes the dynamic quite a bit, especially since you've basically created a job description here (one that reads a bit Bleep Bloop, if I'm being honest šŸ˜…), with fairly demanding requirements.

It sounds to me like what you really need is a paid professional editor.
