I used to work in Information Security which I used to enjoy. The main qualifications needed to work in I.S. are tenacity, paranoid psychosis and bad breath.

My own web site and mail server are protected by spam and virus filters: The spam filter uses (among other things) a set of rules based on Bayes' theorem to identify spam based on a "spam" dictionary , which is added to from the contents of every new spam message received.

The long sequence of random words in many spam messages are put there to "bloat" the Baysian dictionary in spam filters, to eventially slow them down: They're "Denial Of Service" attacks.

But some spam filters will also crash when their dictionary is too large, compromising the machine to potentially allow remote root access. This is a much more serious threat

"Innocent" penis-enlargement and viagra ads often contain links to web sites that contain malicious code.

Spammers don't usually want to enlarge your dick for money. They want access to your computer, for purposes ranging from "just for kicks" to "store pedophilia" or possibly "blow up World Trade Center".

I don't think spam is funny.

Agree Joe, bloody pest it is and getting worse, why the hell some form of legal action can't be taken against spammers is a mystery.

You write an email claiming to want to blow up something, or seduce a 10 yr old and you'll have MIB's by the score kicking your door down in minutes, and rightly so. But ask if anything can be done to trace spammers... Umm sorry can't be done... no way... no recources.... can't be traced anyway.

Spyware is far worse though, clogs your own PC and slows everything down, and most of it is in innocent looking scripts or instructions that don't alarm Virus checkers I understand.

I recently loaded Spy-Bot, it found 47 illegal registry items that Virus checkers and other ad searchers missed.

This piece of news is linked to that spam email that hits our inboxes every day. You know the ones, the ones that claim they are from the Bank of Whatever in Nigeria or whatever, and they want us to give them our cash. Well, somebody has been prosecuted for the "419er" offence in Wales...

Welsh bang up 419er for 20 months

A 33-year-old Nigerian has the dubious honour of being the first advance fee fraudster to be jailed in north Wales for the offence of "going equipped to cheat".

Caernarfon Crown Court handed Peter Okoeguale a 20-month sentence for scammming various individuals - including a Scot who he took for £20,000 and a retired US businessman whose wallet is $46,500 lighter as a result of Okoeguale's activities.

Police slapped the cuffs on Okoeguale as he attempted to board a ferry from Holyhead in Wales to the Irish Republic. He was carrying discs containing the email addresses and telephone numbers of thousands of people worldwide, as well as forged documents. One of these was headed "Nigerian Police Force Contract Investigation Section".

Judge John Rogers QC told the 419er: "You had in your possession a substantial amount of equipment and carefully drafted fraudulent documents with the intention that they should be used to fool gullible people not only in this country but wherever you chose to communicate with them. This is international fraud. Only a period of imprisonment is appropriate."

Judge Rogers also recommended that Okoeguale be deported at the end of his sentence, noting: "In addition I'm quite satisfied that given the gravity of this offence it's detrimental to the welfare of the UK that you should remain here." ®
