My eldest aunt, then in her eighties, thirty years ago set up a church-based group for West Indian teenagers who had been convicted and were on probation.

The initial funding came from her, the church, and her wider family. The group's members were referred to her by the probation services. The group had a 90% success rate with only 10% of the group members offending again. She had recruited some West Indian grandmothers as her original helpers.

She died five years after she had started the group. Six of the former members carried her coffin and all the members, past and present, attended her funeral.

The group is still running and the leaders are now former members, who also provide most of the funds. It was always limited in scope, covering a small geographical part of South London and could never cope with more than twenty at a time.
