That day that Aijou was born her parents knew she was special because the baby was gifted with eyes as blue as the ocean and when her mother first lay eyes on her she knew what she would call her. Aijou or love in Japanese because her mother fell in love with her at that moment and the few years that passed by where bliss. The crops were yielding large amounts of rice and their family was happy because they were blessed with a second child her younger sister Yen. But where there was happiness there is also sorrow and soon everything turned around.
The years passed Aijou and Yen continued to grow as the yield of crops began to lessen. The children did what they could to help but Aijou was only eight and Yen 5 so she had to look after her most of the time while their parents toiled out in the fields. Mother and father began to fight and things began to become harder as the food on the table began to shrink.
There were two days that Aijou would never forget one being the bright sunny summer day when her mother died after suffering with an illness and then the day that everything changed for her. Aijou was only ten, she could hear the rain pouring down of the leaky roof of them home as her father struggled to plug the leaks. There home had become unkept and dirty as well as the rest of them. She had been sitting near the window trying to see out in the dark stormy night, she straightened as she could see a horse and cart making its way down the path to their home. Her blue eyes moved to lock onto the door of their home as someone on the other side knocked at it loudly and her father almost jumped up to answer it quickly.
Yen, her sister moved over to her quickly and Aijou wrapped her arms around her cold sister. The both of them sat there watching as he father talked to the man at the door and a few times the stranger looked to the both of them. Suddenly the stranger pulled out a coin bag and tossed it to their father. That is when everything turned from bad to worse and two men walked into the room quickly. One grabbed Aijou the other her sister and them carried them out of the home. "Otosan!" The both of them screamed out as their father just stood by and watched as they were taken away. She could tell that her father was crying but he made no move to stop the men only turned to count the money in the coin bag.
Her sister and Aijou were placed into the back of the cart the both of them holding onto each other for dear life as the cart set into motion. They traveled for a day before they reached the main city and they were woken up but a crowd around them. They yelled off bids for her sister who woke up first and one of the men excepted one of them. Money was exchanged and her sister was ripped from her arms, "Yen...no..." She was grabbed at that point to keep from going after her sister and as the crowd saw her eye they began to bid once more. Things came to a sudden halt as a women called out a bid that none of them could even hope to match and the crowd began to clear out.
Aijou's ocean blue eyes followed the women as she walked over to the cart. She would never forget her face, it was so warm and understanding as she held out her arms to Aijou. "Come here child..." She reluctantly moved into her arms and she was scooped up into a warmth she hadn't fell for months. That women took her to her home, gave her a bed, clothing and put her to work to earn her keep. She had been her savor but not a day goes by with out her thinking about her sister.
Now Aijou was eighteen, a women but not the softest because of the hard work she performed everyday but today was different because the head of the house was taking her on a trip. Her long black hair had been pulled up in a bun at the top of her head with a ornate comb to decorate her hair and she was given a very pretty pink kimono with sakara flowers as well as matching shoes. She didn't really understand what was going on, never had she been invited to go with the family on a trip and now they were dressing her up. She looked out the window of the carriage as pulled up before the emperor's castle and her eyes went wide. She could feel the nerves begin to well up in the stomach as she stepped out of the carriage and followed behind the rest of the family.
Her blue eyes moved around the castle as she was led through it and suddenly the head of the house came to a stop in front of a large door. "This is where we leave you, you are to go in alone." Aijou didn't know what to say so she simply bowed gracefully and walked through the door way as it was opened. She turned quickly as the doors where shut behind her and she stood there in the empty thrown room. She turned a few times slowly her small frame masked by the layers of the kimono, she may of been small but she was strong because of all the work she had done since she was young. Her larger then average breast heaved against neck line of the kimono as her nerves began to kick in once more, "Hello..." She called out her soft meek voice bouncing off the walls, her mind raced with thoughts. Why was she here? What could anyone possible want with a peasant house worker in the palace? And why was she dressed up like something she wasn't?
