I supply one in Dover, Kent. The National Trust site, The White Cliffs, has a display of secondhand books. You can take as many as you want and leave an unspecified amount as a donation.

People bring books, deposit them, select a few to take away, and leave a donation. The number of books received exceeds those taken away during the Winter, and that reverses in the Summer.

Averaged over a year, that National Trust site makes sixty pounds a DAY from donations for secondhand books, and all of it can be spent on site without approval from Head Office. All the volunteers have to do is rearrange the books, count the money, and sometimes refill the shelves from the reserve stock.

When I retired as a secondhand bookdealer, I gave them seven tonnes of books to start the system. They still have one tonne of my donation in reserve, and about three tonnes from other visitors.
 
Reading a book and feeling like I'm in the story itself is awesome. If I find myself touching my body in reaction to what I am reading then it is time well spent!
