Library Lament

It's nearly impossible to prevent the sun from bleaching the covers of my books.

I can't stand the thought of closing the curtains and shutting off the lovely sunshine yet I hate to see fading spines and dust jackets.

I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't.

Most sites talking about protecting books claim that the damage comes from UV rays and recommend using a UV filtering book covers, as well as drapes and shades to limit light exposure.

This experiment however seems to contradict the usefulness of UV filters and suggests that the only way you're going to protect the colors from fading is by avoiding sunlight and fluorescent light.

You can get a UV protective film to apply to the inside of your windows. It won't make much difference to your appreciation of the sunshine but will protect your books.

I have to say if any bloke pressed his bare gentiles up against one of my books I'd crack the fucking spine on his nose.
