Heretic!

That's what library assistants are for, getting your books when you're too sloshed to make the stairs.

And that's what the police are for, getting you into their car when you're drunk in public.

At one magical instant in your early childhood, the page of a book—that string of confused, alien ciphers—shivered into meaning. Words spoke to you, gave up their secrets; at that moment, whole universes opened. You became, irrevocably, a reader.

I have to drastically reduce my book collection to make room for the new family member. It's both refreshing and depressing. I am getting rid of some crap though. Most books have been in boxes for a while, due to lack of space and have now gotten up to the difficult boxes, like the kids books and the good fantasies and horrors.

When I think of all the books still left for me to read, I am certain of further happiness.

There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.
