Bookmarks not working from story page

For some reason I'm suddenly seeing a problem where the bookmarks list cannot be accessed from a story page. Hovering over the bookmark icon gives the message "This part of the site requires ********** to work, sorry!". But I have ********** working fine, and if I look at a list of stories using the tags portal, I can bring up the bookmarks list for any story by clicking on the bookmark icon at the RHS of the story display.

I've seen this happen for occasional stories before, but now it's happening all the time.

Edit: No idea why those asterisks have replaced 'J a v a S c r i p t' (w/o the spaces).
