Brothers in Arms

Janie was curled up in Chase's bed with her phone.

"No, I am good. No one could ask for a better friend."

She tucked the blanket around herself and did her best to hold herself together. Her heart was broken.

Chase open the window and let the cool night air calm his thoughts. As he pulled into the garage and shut the car off he sighed a bit. Getting ready to put back on his strong man bravado.

Opening the door and putting his keys on the counter he walked to the room "Janie?" He said calling out

Jane was relieved to hear Chase come home.

"I am here. I tried to sleep, but I couldn't. I texted my boss and called in sick for tomorrow."

She sat up, tugging his t shirt down, to cover her white cotton panties.

"Is he okay?" She asked softly.

"Is he ok?" Chase said walking over to her "no, no he's not but I think he came to a solution" he said sitting next to her, resting a hand on her knee gently "he is transferring to a different base and filing for divorce" Chase said looking over at her "it should all be done soon"

Jane had known it was over for some time, but to hear it. It brought everything to the surface and a raw sob broke through her chest. She covered her face, feeling selfish and stupid and weak. Chase didn't deserve to have all of this thrust upon him, but she couldn't stop herself. She truly was heartbroken.

Chase reached over and held her close "it's ok Janie, let it out" he said stroking her hair softly as she sobbed. Truth is he was trying to hold it together himself

She cried until there weren't any more tears and then she was half asleep. She was shivering in his arms even with the blanket tucked around her.

She closed her eyes and her breathing stilled and soon she was asleep in Chase's arms.

Not knowing what to do and tired himself Chase simply held her while she slept, eventually drifting off into sleep on his own. The problem was he never slept well anymore, too many dreams and flashbacks. He dreamed that the team was pinned down in a firefight in the Peshawar Valley and as bullets were fired at them non-stop Scott was separated and he had to make a mad dash to save him. He woke up to find himself in a cold sweat yelling out, blood pressure through the roof

Janine was startled awake when Chase awakened in cold sweat. She sat up with him in the bed.

"You are okay. You are home." She ran her hand down his arm. "You are safe. Feel the soft blanket and my hand. Smell the laundry detergent on the sheets. All of that fear and pain is in the past. " she whispered. She didn't know if it would work but one of the many counsilors that she had talked to about Scott had told her to help him use his senses to connect with the here and now.

Chase looked over at Jane and rubbed his eyes "thanks Janie but that counseling stuff is kind of bs" he said not trying to be mean or condescending, just truthful "it's just sometimes the dreams are so realistic it's hard to go from one to the next. It's not PTSD it's just punishment for the sins I've committed I suppose" he said as he laid down flat on his back and stared at the ceiling

Jane sighed deeply.

"I guess I just feel like I have to help fix it. I am sorry you are still having bad dreams. But you don't deserve to be punished, Chase. None of you do." She kissed his shoulder and then snuggled into bed trying to go back to sleep.

"Hey" Chase said rolling onto his side to look at Jane "thank you for trying to fix it.......honestly, thank you" he said looking into her eyes "I've never had someone try to do that for me before"

She patted his arm.

"You deserve a great girl, Chase." She whispered softly. "You are a great guy and a good friend."

She snuggled up closely.

"Let's try to sleep."

"Great girl, yeah that'd be nice" he said putting his arm around her as he closed his eyes, wishing and praying she would realize that she was the girl he wanted and needed

Jane did manage to sleep some. She was too exhausted not to. She wanted to do something nice for Chase. She slipped out of bed early and made bacon and scrambled eggs.

She also started a pot of coffee. When he awakened she was setting the table in his NAVY t shirt.

Chase awoke to the smell of bacon and smiled, unsure of if he was dreaming or not. He came into the kitchen stretching, his SEAL tats showing briefly on his defined biceps.

"What did I do to deserve this great surprise?" He said smiling, thinking about how used to this he could get

Jane smiled and started dishing up his plate.

"You rescued a damsel in distress. I am headed to base in a bit. I am going to go visit the legal aid office and get the paperwork started." She poured him some coffee and picked up her hot tea. She stirred in a generous spoon of sugar.

"While I'll tell you this" Chase said drinking his coffee "whoever you end up with next is getting one helluva girl" he said smiling up at her as he dug into his food "my god this is amazing!" He said happily eating his prepared breakfast

"Do you need a ride or do you want to take my truck?" Chase said leaning back in his chair

Janie was curled up in her chair, sipping her tea.

"I just need a ride to my car. I know you have stuff to do." She ate a few bites, but she didn't have an appetite.

"It shouldn't be complicated, you know. We don't have kids. We don't have property, other than our cars. Even split." Her voice was sort of flat as she stirred more sugar into her tea.

"Well whatever you need I'm here for you, whatever that may be Janie" Chase said as he finished his breakfast. "Last night he seemed like he just wanted to be done, who knows what the light of dawn will bring to him" he said going to rinse off his plate and put it in the dishwasher.

Janie looked at him with a tilted head.

"Would you take me to a shooting range? I am really tense and pissed off and I think I could blow away some targets." She laughed a little but she knew she had to do something.

She popped up from the table and went to get ready for the day. She took a hot shower and brushed her hair up into a ponytail. She knew she had to move forward.

Chase laughed as she got out of the shower and came back to the room "you ever been shooting?" He said with a smile "I figure if you and Scott ever went I would have had one less teammate for awhile now" he said as put down his cup of coffee "but if you want to go, I think I could arrange that" he said with a wry smile

Jane laughed.

"He took me a few times. But I am awful. But it is a release." She picked up her phone and looked through her texts and emails.

"Okay, just let me know when you are ready to drop me off at my car. "

"I've never know a woman to be ready in such a short amount of time!" Chase said smiling putting down his coffee and picking up his keys "ready when you are and if you want to go shooing, I'll show you the proper way" he said as he held the door open for her

Janie carried her little overnight bag to his car. She slid into passenger seat. She wished she could stay with Chase for a while but she didn't want to impose. Besides, he was Scott's friend too and Scott might need a shoulder too.

When they got to her place the front porch was strewn with beer cans and the drivers side window to her car was shattered.

"Seriously?" Was all she managed to get out. Her plans for the day were ruined.
