It was the first flag used by the navy when it was just a flegling organization of four ships.
Presented to Commodore Hopkins by Christopher Gadsden who took a common colonial image of the rattlesnake first printed by Ben Franklin and added the Motto "Don't Tread On Me" to the flag. Gadsden was the South Carolina representative to the Continental Congress. He presented the same flag to the South Carolina government to fly over their statehouse.

OH, yes...I read somewhere "like the old days" - when Lit first started.....it was wonderful.....this thread brings that all back - well, almost....thanks elusive

*smiles* Ahhh yes I was once a newbie, but not I feel like "old hat" LOL Oh well you can only be new once and only have a 1st experience once (much to my dismay), however, we can always roll with the tide and even though we are not new, there are others who are and I am excited in their newness. It brings back wonderful memories and I just hope we remember what it was like for us and treat them the way we wanted (and were, for the most part) treated.

We are all newbies...even if only in our memories.
