Can we please not?

I doubt that Trump wants a war with Venezuela. What he definitely wants is an end to drugs coming in from South America and he also wants Venezuela to resume being a livable country again so their millions of refugees-from-socialism will stop coming to the USA.
Actually, we don't seem to be getting much of those like we once did from Cuba. Just your usual migrants moving away from or toward the usual things.

Wonder what will happen when the first American service member is killed there? Even a helicopter crash outside of the war zone will make Americans start thinking differently about their President slavering after a Nobel Peace Prize!
No it won't. His cult members will still think he deserves one, and everyone else already knows how absurd that is.

The US is not going to “war” with Venezuela. They don’t have the capability to engage in a war. They don’t have any significant air, missile, or navel power. If the cartels want to take on Uncle Sam, they will be quickly extinguished.

Maduro is a bad actor in our hemisphere and he’s gotta go. He facilitates cartel drug smuggling, uses a fleet of tankers that ship sanctioned oil from his own country as well as oil from Russia and Iran. He has impoverished his country and terrorized thousands of his countrymen who flee to the US border.

The US is pressuring him to leave, and one way or another, he will be gone. The US is reasserting its role as the dominant power in the Western Hemisphere.

We could defeat Venezuela's armed forces as easily as Iraq's. But, as in Iraq, that's when the war STARTS.

Well, not quite the same. Jungle warfare, not desert. Americans can always handle jungles, right?

WHY?! What's the point?! In this hemisphere, we have no need or use for any more power than we've got!

Ridiculous comparison. Iraq had extensive territory, a large, war-tested loyalist army, military jets and missiles, and a fragmented population representing armed Kurds, Sunnis and Shia religious and ethnic groups. We bombed the shit out of Iraqi military installations for days before putting significant troops on the ground. They encountered terrorist militias of many stripes, armed and financed by hostile powers.

The US is asserting its control over the Western Hemisphere. We don’t like what Maduro is doing and we’re getting rid of him.

What's not to like? We've never been above supporting dictators, not unless they give us some particular reason not to, and Maduro really hasn't. He's not doing anything to put together some anti-American regional alliance. The drug trade is no better or worse than it would be under anybody else.

You’re correct that there’s nothing not to like, and you’re correct that America has a long history of supporting governments that advance American interests.

The US won’t allow Latin American governments to help Russia and Iran profit from oil, and we won’t allow China or Cuba buy it. We won’t allow them to harbor drug cartels that sell product in the US, and we won’t tolerate them making life so desperate for their own citizens to seek refuge in our country.

That said, I grant you the freedom to cry on this site as I do for all my victims here.

I know how to make peace, here! We'll exchange the highest-ranking hostages -- presidents!
I grant you the same freedoms of denial I’ve granted to many other starry eyed liberals on this site, but the fact remains Maduro is a bad actor who works against America’s interests. Like it or not, he’s on his way out.

But the number of cult member slavishly following him after that, combined with their experience of inflation, unemployment, measles epidemics etc etc. etc. will mean the "percentage disapproval rating" will skyrocket.
