Travis had spent the day working hard. He was glad that the family had wanted to help out and was surprised with the way everyone had pitched in, even Pete with his broken leg. He had sat on the couch and helped out by going through old boxes they had found in the attic and the rooms, finding anything he thought was useful and placing it into a pile. Travis was actually surprised by some of his choices but when he explained them he was impressed. The minds of kids always thought of things in totally different ways.
His main job had been securing the bottom level, and he had spent the morning destroying a few of the cupboards and wardrobes for timber to cover the windows and moving other furniture to block the doors. It was Pete again who had come up with a fabulous design for that. Travis had been just piling stuff up, but had then had the thought of, What if they needed to get out quickly?
The problem was it needed to be solid to keep people out, but easy enough to shift in an emergency. he had been sitting there trying to puzzle it out when Pete had called out wondering what he was doing. Travis had explained things, never one to belittle kids or their brainpower. He had thought for about ten minutes and had then got all excited calling for his cousin Becky to go and grab his I Pad. He had then shown Travis a game where a bunch of things could be stacked in front of a door then slid across to get it out of the way but not backwards when people tried to get in.
Travis smiled and ruffled his hair and soon the doors were blocked and he tested them out. Then he had spent a few hours roaming the streets in his truck, going from one secure house to another, scavenging what he could, both in food and building materials. By the end of the day he had gotten a few more goodies and a good supply of building stuff. In fact he thought he would have enough to finish off the outside tomorrow. Then they would really be safer, at least from the crazies and could relax a little.
He made it back close to dinner time and helped set up a few sniper nests for himself. He would be teaching everyone how to shoot after they secured the house, but for now he was sure Anubis and himself would be enough.
As he was coming down from the roof where he had set up the last one, he found everyone discussing new rooms. He smiled as he walked to the front door to grab his duffle bag of clothes and Anubis's stuff. It would be good to sleep in an actual bed again. With the decision to stay he would actually choose a bed, but he would make sure it was downstairs in case anything happened.
He bumped into Ruth on his way to choose and she directed him towards one. "End of the hall, Travis. Best room in the house. Close to the kitchen ... private bathroom..." She elbowed Carmen inconspicuously, adding, "Easy access to the other amenities ... and quiet ... very quiet, so you don't have to listen to the kids and--" She cleared her throat as if to emphasize conspicuously to him the possibilities, "--the kids don't have to listen to you."
He wondered why Carmen had been there, but she was probably choosing her room as well. As he walked towards the room it suddenly hit him, "--the kids don't have to listen to you," she had said. My god was she giving him permission to take Carmen to his room and with Carmen right there was she actually trying to encourage it! He was a little shocked but then if she was okay with it it was one less worry of his mind. Now it was just up to Carmen to decide if it was something she truly wanted to do.
Dinner was just as awkward for Travis with Ruth again hinting at his new place in the scheme of things. he wished she would stop as it now felt she was putting undue pressure on Carmen to do the exact thing he did not want her to do. It seemed Ruth was trying to set up Carmen with Travis as a sort of reward and way to keep him around. Travis sighed. He had just got over telling her he did not want that and now here was her Aunt pushing her into that situation. he might have to have words with her next.
Still the dinner was good and with the things he had scrounged they wouldn't go hungry for awhile. He had hardly hit any of the houses yet either and had mainly concentrated on building supplies today. He would probably have to go back again and give them a second look.
Once they had finished dinner Travis went outside to try something. The only way into the house area was the drive because the large gates had been torn down. Travis thought he might have a simple solution that might last for a little while.
With Anubis to keep watch he took a large coil of rope to the gates and began to tie one end to the first pillar. As he turned Anubis barked and he had his 9mm out and in his hand, pointed towards where his partners nose was facing at head height. A crazy was running towards him and he calmly put 2 shots in it's head and began to walk on. The things head had exploded into a fine red mist, although it's body had continued on for another four steps before falling over. Travis had converted all his ammunition into hollow points long ago. He made sure if he hit it was doing damage.
Tying the rope to the other side, he pulled it tight at waist height and tied it off. He hoped that the Crazies tendency to stop when blocked would apply to a rope as well. If they felt the rope on their waist and it held they should think 'Nope can't go that way'. Well that was his hope anyway, at least until he fixed the gates.
He made his way back inside and grabbed a drink. Today had been a good day and he was looking forward to another hot shower and then an actual bed to sleep in.
